Dusk Before Dawn.

I sat quietly in the living room, on the floor, listening to the walls sway in our strangled apartment complex. I looked at the clock near the couch. Almost four. I should finish dinner. I stood up, and headed toward the kitchen, catching a glimpse of myself in the reflection of a photograph hanging on the wall. I stopped and stared for a moment, putting my finger to my lip. My eyes swelled, but I made the tears retreat back to their hiding places. There was no room for them here. I went into the kitchen and discovered another leak beneath the sink. I scurried to find another empty pot to catch the water. I’d tell him. But I couldn’t. He’d blame it on me. I closed the cabinet and went into the refrigerator, retrieving the steaks I’d let marinate throughout the day, while I cleaned the apartment ruthlessly. Not a speck on the carpet. I moved quickly, placing the steaks in to broil and heating up the mashed potatoes. I went to the table and put our plates down. I shined the forks and knives with my t-shirt and placed them parallel to the plates. I looked at the clock. 4:24. My heartbeat quickened. I took another look at the living room before I scurried down the hall to the bedroom to make sure that everything was in its place.

I went back into the living room, just as I heard the door click and saw the knob turn. He entered the house and his eyes fell upon mine. My breath scurried away and I smiled a little, hoping he was in a good mood. He shut the door behind him, ignoring me, and began to take off his shoes. I should say something. Ask him how his day is. Do it!

“H-how was your day, babe?” I asked.

“Dinner ready?” He responded, loosening his tie.

“The steaks are in the oven right now. Mashed potatoes and broccoli is done.” I said quickly.

He stared at me for a moment before he walked past me. I exhaled and stood there, before I felt a blow to my lower back. I fell to my knees – asking God, “Why?” the entire way down.

this story is soo captivating and full of twists and turns! Im surprised I hadnt started reading until today. Im praying that Avery doesnt find Joy and that somehow Roland can let Lorena down easy. I dont want any1 to get hurt!!

run it!!

I'm glad that Mama C isn't hurt that bad but why did Roland go through with the wedding. What will happen when Joy comes back to Saluda? I'm happy that Avery got arrested before he could get to June or hurt anyone else. Run it

Mama C waved goodnight to Margaret who dropped her off at home and entered her dark house. She exhaled and shut the door, before she turned to go to the steps. She heard a gun click and froze. She felt the cold metal against her head.

“Sit down.” He said clearly.

Mama C’s body filled with endorphins and she sat down on the couch, ready to fight or run. He turned on a lamp and she looked at him. His face was wet from sweat and he was holding a bottle that smelled horrid. She looked at the bottle and then at him.

“She never mentioned your drinking problem.” Mama C said.

He looked at the bottle and then at her, the gun pointed directly at her temple. “I don’t drink usually.”

“Great time to start,” She mumbled.

“Shut up, alright? I don’t wanna have to kill you, but I will. Right now you’re standing between Joy and me and…that’s not fair. Why would you wanna do that? You don’t know me. You don’t know how good I’ve been to her.” He said.

“Good to her?” She asked. “When I found her outside on this very street, her nose was damn near broken. Is that good?”

“That was a moment of weakness. I’m cured now. I just want to see Joy. Take her to dinner. Request that she come home but I won’t make her. I can move here maybe. We’re supposed to have a family,” He said.

Mama C looked at him and noticed the small ounce of hope in his eye. She sighed. There was no way in hell she’d let him get to Joy.

“I found her bedroom upstairs, so I know that you sent her away. Just tell me where you sent her.” He said.

“No.” Mama C refused.

He put the gun to her head and pushed forcefully. “Lady, I’ll ask you one more time. Where did you send her?”

Mama C didn’t say anything and he hit her with the butt of the gun, sending her onto the floor. She groaned in pain, “Raleigh. Motel in Raleigh. Route 24.” She lied.

Avery put the gun away and stood there for a moment. He felt bad for hitting her. He went into the kitchen and grabbed a towel, before he put ice in it and came back quickly. She was sitting up now, holding her head. He handed it to her.

“I’m sorry.” He whispered, before he sprinted out of the house and ran down the street to his car.

Mama C looked at the towel and then at the picture of Jesus on the wall. “Bless his poor, conflicted soul.” She said softly.

Once he got to his car, he went to open the door. He was headed to Raleigh.

“Freeze!” He heard. He looked around to see 5 guns pointed at him.

He put his hands up, “What’s going on?” He asked.

“You’re under arrest for intent to kill and possession of an illegal firearm.” One officer stated, coming forward and slamming him up against the car.

Avery shook his head and bit his lip, “f***!” He yelled.

He’d bought the gun at a “shop” he saw on the way down. They saw the whole thing. They’d been watching him.

“Please make sure Joy knows where I am.” He said.

“Yeah right. Shut the f*** up,” One of the officers said, pushing him toward a car. “You pathetic piece of s***.”

They pushed him inside and Avery laid his head up against the driver’s seat and cried for Joy.

Roland stood before Lorena, his tears mirroring hers. Only his weren’t there because he felt an irreplaceable love for her. Flashbacks of he and Joy making love brought him to tears. He was a fraud, standing here professing his love to a woman he’d fallen out of love with before his family and God…while Joy sat in a motel, fearing for her life. Lorena smiled at him and wiped his tears, but they were replaced. Cheryl cried joyful tears in the front row and watched the two of them in awe. Mama C thought about Joy – wondered if she’d eaten today. Margaret looked around the sanctuary for her…wondered why she hadn’t shown up yet. Jeremiah looked for her too, hoping they could dance together at the reception.

Roland sat next to Lorena, staring out in front of him at the reception. He didn’t notice the masses coming to the table and showering them with blessings. He’d glance in their direction before he’d look elsewhere. Mama C came up finally and looked at him. He wrote down the telephone number and slid it to her.

“She okay?” She asked him.

He nodded and looked away from her. Mama C could feel something there – in those eyes. In the melancholic face of her grandson. She walked toward Margaret and borrowed her cell phone before she dialed the number. The phone rang 4 times before it was answered. There was a pause and then a soft voice coming through the phone.

“…Who’s calling?” I asked.

“Joy its Mama C.” She said.

“Hi Mama.” I said softly.

“Baby are you alright? Have you eaten today?” She asked.

“Yes I ordered some Chinese.” I stated.

“We’ll get you home as soon as we can, okay? I love you.” She said.

“I love you too.” I responded, before I hung up the phone.

Mama C sighed and ended the phone call, before she retreated to her seat. Cheryl took photographs with her son and Lorena. As happy as she was about the day, she could see on her son’s face that he didn’t share her enthusiasm. He walked outside at one point and stood looking up at the sky. She came up behind him and smiled a little.

“Why are you out here?” She asked, looking over at her son.

“Needed a break,” He responded, glancing at her.

Cheryl stood in front of her son and rested her hands on his chest. “Will you at least try to be happy with Lorena?” She asked. “I know this isn’t exactly what you want but…she really loves you, Roland.”

“I know.” He stated. “That’s why I’m here. Because she loves me. Because you’ve made it clear, since she finally said yes to me, at 14, that I was supposed to marry her. I live to please you, Ma.” He said, sarcastically, turning to leave.

She grabbed his hand, “Hey, don’t be like that.” She said. “I only told you to marry Lorena because I thought…it just all made sense to me. You loved each other so much, I figured marriage would be next.”

“Well, guess you were right. We’re married. You get to see your dream realized.” He said, going back inside.

Cheryl clutched her chest and stood up against one of the pillars. She covered her face with her hands and cried softly.

Lorena’s maid of honor made a toast to Lorena and Roland. He tried his best to appear interested, as he watched her speak about the two of them passionately…as if she really knew them. He smiled at the thought of it before he looked out at everyone. No one knew anything about them, really. No one knew that he was breaking, because no one cared.

Avery, with his bottle of whiskey, stood near a tree, watching everyone file out of Mama C’s house. He took another swig and was sure to submerge himself within the shadows of the branches. He’d wait, until they all left. Once the cars pulled out of the driveway, he walked toward the empty home. He went around to the back and looked around before he opened the door. They didn’t lock doors down here. He walked inside and shut the door behind him, before he moved swiftly through the home, looking for traces of Joy.

He climbed the steps and opened the doors to all of the rooms when he found… one bedroom near the bathroom, with an empty bed. The person had left in a hurry. He could tell, because there were things that they left behind. An earring on the vanity. A hanger dangling from the curtain rod. A photograph beneath the bed. Avery bent down and grabbed the picture. It was the older woman…with Joy. He balled it up in his hands, furious that they’d lied. He was so close. He pulled out the gun he had tucked in his waistband and checked the safety before he put it back. Now… he’d wait.

At the gas station, where he’d abandoned his car, two undercover cops walk toward it, check the license plate and glance inside. A few bottles of whiskey in the backseat and a black duffel bag. They nod toward one another. This was his car. Now… they’d wait.

Roland and I didn’t sleep, as we lied in each other’s arms. The alarm on his phone went off, disrupting the moment – ending our time together. My eyes met his and he shut his and kissed my forehead before he unraveled and sat on the edge of the bed. I sat up on my elbow, watching as he hesitated. He grabbed his things and put them on, his eyes on the carpet. We didn’t say anything, as he got dressed. I sat up now and wrapped the sheet around me, before I walked toward him and grabbed his face. He looked me in the eye now.

“…Blame it on me.” I said. “Don’t take this guilt with you to the wedding. Lorena’s waiting for you.”

“How can I not feel guilty, Joy? I’m a terrible person.” He said.

“It didn’t happen. Forget about it.” I said softly.

“It did, Joy. And I didn’t want it to end.” He said, shaking his head. “I don’t want to leave you right now.”

“There’s a man here that wants to kill me. Run from me. This was my fault. All of it. I led you here. If I hadn’t come to Saluda, you’d marry Lorena and live happily ever after. Blame it on me.” I said, grabbing his hand.

“I won’t.” He said, shaking his head. “Because it takes two. I’m here because I want to be.”

I dropped his hand and walked back to the bed. I sat with my back turned. I couldn’t watch him leave. The door to the motel room opened and closed and I pulled my knees in close and watched his shadow dance along the wall, as he left.

I love Mama C.... She is a quick study, that she is... I hope I'm that wise when I get older.

Avery ass.. idk what to say about him... I hope his Doctor got to the police in time...

I was not expecting that to happen between Roland and June... He better not go to that damn wedding.. This was the icing on the cake. If he marries Lorena and I'm done with him...

Wowwwwwww is all I can say at this point RUN IT!

:O is right! lol tf Avery? And what about his doctor calling the police?! I'm glad Mamma C picked up on who he was first hand. And aww man I can't believe they finally did it. What happens now?! His wedding is that day? Why do I feel like he's still going to go :(

You can't leave us hanging all day! lol this is too much

Wow....so Avery found June. I am so scared for her, I just hope that he doesn't hurt June or Mama C and her family. Ok soooo June and Roland did what I know both of them have been waiting and wanting to do, but the timing was awful. I mean Roland is supposed to get married in a few hours?! This is bad. Roland can't get married now. He has to tell Lorena what happened though, he has to be honest. This is not going to play out well :( but I can't wait to read more!! BUMPS!!!

damnnnn, avery actually found her .. hope he dont do nothin stupid.
hmmm, cant wait too see how this wedding plays out ..
