Jay walked outside and blew warmth into his palms as the chilly evening air whipped across his face. He dug his hands in his pockets and walked down the empty block. He got to his post and stood there, looking in both directions. It had been a year. He was well on his way to a promotion, so he didn't sweat the lonely nights. He pulled out his iPhone and went through his contacts. He stopped on Monique's name, just as a young guy approached. He looked to be about 15. Jay looked him in the face and nodded.

"Mookie sent me." The guy said.

Jay dug in his pocket and handed him a dime bag. The dude handed him a crumpled twenty and walked off down the street. Jay pressed Monique's name and put the phone to his ear. Her voice broke the silence surrounding him and he looked down the street, as he leaned up against the building he shared this corner with.

"What you doin tonight?" He asked, his tone of voice implying that he wanted to see her.

"Mm, nothing if you tryna come through." She said.

"Be up when I call." He said, hanging up the phone and putting it back in his pocket.

He sighed and looked up at the sky and marveled at the number of stars he could count tonight. He wondered what was up there. He wondered who was sharing this view with him this evening.

3 miles to the north, Selena looked up at the stars and wished that she was there. She looked back at the crowd of kids surrounding the swimming pool, celebrating graduation. She spotted Narvin and his eyes were glued to her. She turned away and sighed. She heard his footsteps behind her on the concrete. He put his hand on her lower back and she stepped away.

"Are you crazy? What are you doing?" She asked, looking at him.

"I haven't heard from you." He said.

"I didn't know this was something I'd committed to." She said, frowning at him.

"So what? What happened doesn't mean anything to you?" He asked.

"No. She's my best friend, Narvin." Selena snapped.

"Can I have everyone's attention!"

Selena heard her best friend Chelsea's voice and she shivered.

"I wanna thank everyone for coming! Thanks to everyone who has ever been there for me. We're graduating you guys! This is huge. I've had so many good times with everyone out here. I'm gonna miss everyone. I really wanna thank my best friend Selena and my boyfriend Narvin for being there when I needed them. I love the both of you. I don't know who I'd be without you guys." She said.

Narvin smiled and Selena's face swelled with tears. She stared blankly back at her best friend and then at the sky. She didn't want to be here anymore.

Short add! There should be more tomorrow (:

Selena noticed that every Saturday morning, James was up early, dressed in khakis and a button up shirt. She'd looking at him curiously from the bed as he brushed his hair.

"Baby...did you get a new job?" She asked.

"Something of the sort." He responded, grabbing a manilla folder and walking towards her, kissing her forehead. "Don't worry. It's not illegal."

"It better not be." She said, watching him leave the room.

She looked over at the girls in their cribs, with their feet up, laughing and murmuring. The girls would be 5 months this week, and Selena was big on seeing where they were developmentally. She got their donut pillows and sat them down on the floor. She picked them each up and sat them there. They each had pretty strong heads at this point, and with the aid of the pillow, they sat up pretty straight. She smiled and snapped a picture.

She played with them on the floor for a little while, when Charity walked in.

"Hey, Shane's here." She said.

Selena stood up and put a twin on each hip. She carried them out into the living room and Shane smiled.

"Damn they're getting big." He said, taking Ashton from her.

Ashton touched his face, and looked at Selena. Selena smiled at her and she looked back at him, staring blankly. He kissed her cheek and she smiled and lied her head on his shoulder.

"Oh...she's easy." He said.

Selena narrowed her eyes at him, "Shane...f*** you." She said.

"Shut up, Mommy." He said, smiling and kissing Selena's cheek, "I missed you. Gotta bring my God daughters by more often."

She nodded, "As soon as we get car seats, I'll bring them over."

The door opened and James pushed a big box into the room. Selena looked at him funny. It was two connected car seats. Shane shook his head.

"Y'all niggas can read minds." He said.

James put his manilla folder on the table near the door and looked at Selena.

"Hey babe. Shane, what's up?" He said, dapping him up and kissing Charity's forehead.

Selena looked curiously at the folder then at the car seat. She walked towards their room, as James took Ashton from Shane and followed her. Selena shut the door.

"Baby how can we afford that? We have to get my cap and gown." She said, sitting down on the bed and holding Aubrey on her lap.

"I already ordered your stuff." He said, shaking his head. "We have enough money. We don't have a lot, but we get the stuff we need."

She nodded and kissed the crown of Ashton's head.

"I just don't want them to struggle." She said softly.

"They won't." He said, "I've got a plan for us."

She looked over at him and nodded, trusting that he truly did have a plan. James had already been applying to jobs in South Carolina. His guidance rep had a lot of connections, so James was preparing for the move...and Selena had no idea.

James walked into the bank and asked to speak with someone. He waited for a little while, before he got called back finally. He stood up and walked down the hall. The woman was friendly, which made him happy. He sat down and she looked over at him.

"What can I help you with?" She asked.

"My girlfriend and I just had twins and...we're looking to buy a house." He said.

"Congrats on the twins," She said, smiling. "Is there somewhere in particular that you're looking at?"

"I heard that you guys work closely with South Carolina real estate, right? The coast-to-coast program?" He asked.

She nodded, "We do, you've done your research. Is that where you'd like to move?"

He nodded, "I want somewhere new for my girls. I also read that you work with people like me to get on a plan to achieving homeownership. I'm, kind of in a rough place right now financially, but I've saved a lot of money in the last few years."

She printed something off of the computer and handed it to him.

"How much we talkin?" She asked.

"Almost $8,000." He said. "After my next paycheck, it'll be that much."

She smiled a little and nodded, "That's a good start. Fill this out, and I'll set you up with your own guidance representative that'll lead you through the next few steps, and get your loan program set up. My goal for you, is to save up $10,000, then we're talking down payments on a place."

He nodded and bit his lip, "Okay. I can do that." He said, looking over at her and smiling a little. "Thank you."

He filled out the paper and handed it back to her before he stood up and left the office. He didn't plan on telling Selena until after she graduated.

Ashton and Aubrey took turns crying, so Selena and James took turns sleeping. With the cribs being right in the room, however, both of them barely got any sleep. James sat up at the break of Aubrey's cry and he wiped his eyes sleepily. He stood over her crib and picked her up. Her cries stopped automatically. He rubbed her back soothingly and looked up at the chart that they had posted on the wall. She'd just had her diaper changed 45 minutes ago...but she might've been hungry. He walked out of the room and down the hall to a put a bottle on for her. She cried silently now, looking up at him. He kissed her forehead.

"You and your sister are going to kill me and mommy." He said.

She smiled and he shook his head, "You got that from me."

He checked the bottle to make sure that it wasn't too warm and took the top off, putting it in her mouth. She drank it rhythmically, closing her eyes and playing with her ear. James smiled watching her. When she was finished, he put the dirty bottle in the sink and carried a sleeping Aubrey back to their room. James and Selena got about 4 hours of sleep before they heard the girls again. Selena rolled over and looked at James, who was looking back at her.

"They aren't crying, though." He mumbled.

The two of them stood up and walked towards them, to see the girls looking at each other, smiling and making noises. Selena smiled and picked up Aubrey, as James picked up Ashton.

"Good morning beautiful." She said, kissing Aubrey's cheek.

She and James put the girls in bouncers while James got dressed and Selena made breakfast. He came out into the living room, dressed for work.

"You gonna be okay?" He asked.

She nodded. James hadn't been to work in a few weeks, helping Selena get adjusted with the babies, but they needed his income. She pecked his lips repeatedly and smiled.

"I'll be fine. Go to work, and I'll see you tonight." She said.

He grabbed her face and kissed her deeply, "I love you." He said.

"I love you too." She responded, hugging him.

He kissed her forehead and turned to leave. He kissed both of the girls on his way out. Selena made herself a plate and saved some for James, before she heard Ashton's cry. She could distinguish them now.

"Got your bottles." She said, walking out into the living room.

She sat down on the floor in front of their bouncers and balanced both of their bottles in their mouths, while taking breaks and eating some of her food. Charity walked into the room and smiled.

"Selena, eat." She said, taking Aubrey's bottle from her.

Selena smiled over at Charity and ate with her free hand, while she fed Ashton.

1 month later

An angry Selena threw her cup of ice across the room and exhaled deeply. Charity grabbed her hand and looked at James.

"It's too hard!" She yelled.

"Selena, what the f***? How do I change the texture of ice?" James shrieked.

Charity grabbed his hand as well and looked the both of them, "You're gonna drive each other crazy. James, ask if they can crush the ice. Tell them that your girl is in labor, and she needs it. Selena, take a deep breath."

James scurried out of the room and Selena took deep breaths with Charity, who rubbed her hand. Yolanda came into the room, on her cell phone. She smiled at Selena.

"No no, cancel all of my clients today." Yolanda said, hanging up the phone and walking to Selena.

"Oh baby, how do you feel?" She asked.

"LIKE s*** MOM!" Selena shrieked.

Both of the girls were set and ready to go. The breech twin had turned, just as Selena had predicted. Her contractions were becoming closer together and the pain was unbearable. The tears flowed freely and Charity put her hair up in a bun, as James came running in the room with her ice. He handed it to her and she knocked it back, crunching on it. She looked at James.

"Thank you." She said through her tears.

He nodded, leaning over onto his knees and taking a deep breath.

"Where's your pain at, baby?" He asked.

"I'm at a 19." She said, sighing and arching her back. "Give me the epidural. I can't do this."

"No epidural until 25." James said.

Selena threw the ice at him.

"I NEED IT NOW!" She yelled.

James bit his lip, "You're so lucky to be in this state right now." He said. "Don't ask for no more."

Selena started to cry louder and he ran out into the hall, looking for the nurse that was helping out with the delivery. The nurse came in and looked at Selena. She put on her gloves and checked Selena's dilations.

"You're at 7 cm. Almost there." She said. "I'll give you the epidural, but you have to be extremely still, do you hear me?"

Selena nodded and cried silently. After the epidural was administered, Selena wiggled for a little while longer, with James holding one hand and Yolanda holding the other. Soon enough, she didn't feel anything. She took a deep breath and looked at James.

"Sorry for throwing the ice." She said.

"Shhhh." He said, wiping her head.

The nurse came back in to check and smiled, jogging towards the door.

"We're ready!" Selena heard her say.

"Oh s***." Selena mumbled.

James stood up and the doctor came in and handed him some scrubs to wear. He got changed and washed his hands, before he walked back in to see Selena sitting with her legs propped open, pushing and breathing. Charity left the room, but Yolanda was right there, holding Selena's hand. Selena pushed hard, and the first twin's head appeared.

"You're doing great, Selena." The doctor coached.

After 25 minutes of pushing, the second twin was well on her way. The first was with the nurse, getting wiped off and weighed. James stood anxiously at the end of the bed, when the second twin's heart rate started to fall dramatically. Selena looked at the heart monitor and then at the doctor.

"Get her! Get her!" Selena yelled, starting to cry.

Yolanda rubbed her hand and kissed her cheek, "She's gonna be okay. This happened with you."

The doctor got the suction-cup device and proceeded to pull the baby gently out. As soon as she hit the air, her cries cracked the quiet murmur in the room. Selena exhaled and lied back. Tears were falling from James' eyes and he was smiling. The nurse brought the first twin to James and he stroked her cheek and kissed her forehead.

"Hi Aubrey." He said, kissing her cheek and holding his lips there.

Selena smiled over at James, as they handed the next girl to her. She took the baby and held her tightly, kissing her cheek.

"Hi Ashton." She said, stroking her cheek.

James walked towards her and they swapped babies. She looked up at James and pecked his lips.

"I love you so much." She said, starting to cry again.

James smiled and kissed her cheek repeatedly, "I love you too baby."

James logged into his bank account and dropped a third of his paycheck it in his savings account, as Selena walked into the room. He logged out immediately and turned towards her. She took off her work badge and put it down on the dresser. She'd been working as a teaching aide at an elementary school every afternoon. It was a pretty simple job, that kept her busy. She sat down on his lap and smiled.

"You so heavy." He said, pecking her lips.

"What were you doing online?" She asked, looking at the computer.

"Investing in our future." He responded, grabbing his econ book and sighing. "My evening." He mumbled.

She smiled and wrapped her arms around his shoulders, "It'll someday pay off."

"Someday, feels so far away from today." He said, looking over at her.

"Let's just enjoy the ride." She said.

He nodded and Charity came to the door and knocked.

"Hey, Lena you ready?" She asked.

Selena nodded and stood up, "Babe we're gonna go to Target and stock up on some stuff for the girls." Selena said, standing up.

"What's the point of a baby shower if you two buy everything?" He asked, narrowing his eyes.

"Auntie Charity will take care of everything." Charity said, smiling and leaving the door.

Selena blew him a kiss and walked out of the apartment. They went outside and got in the car and Selena smiled down at her stomach.

"They've been so active today." She said.

"They're best friends already." Charity responded. "Was James really upset about her moving?"

Selena nodded, "Of course! It's James. He flipped." She said, sighing. "She's gonna turn though. I read somewhere that only like 3% of babies are actually breech when it comes time for delivery. I'll be fine." She said, smiling.

"I can't tell if this positive act is an act or not..." Charity said.

"It's not. I'm just really in a good state of mind. Everything's gonna work out. Money, delivery. Everything will be great." Selena said, smiling.

James sat next to Selena in the waiting room as she read over some old magazines and rubbed her stomach. November was approaching and Selena and James were getting more and more excited as the days went on. She looked over at him.

"I want a cheeseburger." She said.

"Okay fat momma, I'll get you one as soon as we're done." He said.

Selena stood up and walked over to the other table, grabbing another magazine. James narrowed his eyes at her.

"There's like 30 magazines right here." He said.

"They're all old." She said.

"Selena, what? All of these are old." He said, smacking his lips.

"Leave me alone." She said, sitting down.

The door opened and the woman smiled, "Selena, the doctor's ready for you."

Selena stood up with James' aide and they walked behind the nurse down to the doctor's office. She sat down on the examination table and swung her feet. James looked around the room then at Selena.

"You never told me about the ultrasound from last week." He said, looking over at her.

Selena smiled a little and shook her head, " went okay." She said softly.

The doctor walked into the room with a smile on his face.

"Hello!" He said loudly, plopping down and opening his file.

"Oh look here! One of the girls has managed to turn around." He said.

James cut his eyes at Selena, "I'm sorry I was unaware. Can I see?" He asked.

Selena swallowed and looked at the doctor, "It's okay though, right? She'll turn back around?"

"Well, sometimes they do. Now that she's turned, and having her sister there, it might take a while. The worst case scenario would be to do a cesarean." He said.

Selena sighed, "Um, is it possible to do the normal procedure with one of the babies?"

He shook his head, "I'm sorry it isn't. But hey, you'll be back in a few weeks. Let's hope that she's turned around."

James looked at the ultrasound then at the doctor. After the appointment, James shook his head at Selena.

" you keep s*** like that to yourself?" He asked.

"It's not a big deal James. Babies turn all of the time." Selena said.

"She's breech, Selena. That is a big deal." He responded. "A cesarean is going to be worse for you. I don't want that."

"Well maybe we can try some of those techniques he told us about in there." Selena said, walking after him as he walked quickly out of the hospital.

"I'm not talking to you right now." He said.

"Honestly, you not talking to me won't solve anything." She said.

He ignored her and kept walking. Selena stopped and sat down on the bench outside of the hospital. He stopped in the middle of the parking lot and looked at her.

"What are you doing?!" He yelled.

She continued to sit and he smacked his lips and walked back towards her. He plopped down on the bench and sighed deeply.

"Anything concerning the girls, I need to know immediately." He said, looking over at her.

She nodded, "Babies are breech often. I just didn't wanna worry you." She said.

"I'm worried anyway." He said, exhaling. "So many things can go wrong with her." He said, looking over at her.

Selena nodded, looking at him, "I'll try to do some of the stuff he suggested after work tomorrow, but I have a feeling that she's gonna turn around." Selena said, smiling a little.

"I'm glad you're so positive." He said, looking at her blankly.

She kissed his cheek and smiled, "Don't worry about it."

He cracked a smile, but let it fade, in true James fashion.

"C'mon. Let's get your burger." He mumbled.

Run it

A drunken James plopped down on the couch next to Selena and smiled over at her. She shook her head and shut her book.

"Really? 2 nights this week?" She said, narrowing her eyes at him.

"It's Shane's fault." He mumbled, leaning back and shutting his eyes.

She grabbed her laptop and pulled it into her lap, struggling to get comfortable with her stomach in the way. James looked over at her and then at the clock.

"You need to get some sleep." He said.

"I have this one journal response. I'll be done in 30." She said, putting on her glasses. "Go to bed. I'll be there soon."

James kissed her forehead and walked slowly to the room. She watched him leave the room and sighed. The next morning, when James rolled over, Selena was up and dressed, ironing his work stuff.

"Why you doin that?" He asked, getting up and wiping his eyes.

"Because you're running late. You slept through your alarm." She said, handing him his work pants.

"Oh s***!" He said, hopping up and throwing the pants on. "I gotta make my lunch." He said, going to his dresser and putting on lotion.

"I made it. It's on the counter." She said, waddling back to the bed and sitting down.

He looked at her through the mirror, "You're a lifesaver. I'm not going out anymore during the week."

He scurried out of the room and went to the bathroom. Selena went down the hall and picked up the mail at the door. She separated it into piles and took her bills to her room. She sat down on the bed and pulled out her calculator. James walked back into the room, stuffing his work shirt into his pants, when he noticed the distressed look on Selena's face. He shut the laptop.

"Too much stress. I told you that I'll pay everything. You just give me half on rent." He said.

"James, we're paying two cell phone bills." She said sighing.

"And what did I tell you we were doing this weekend? I'm putting you on my plan. Babe, I got us." He said, looking at her. "I don't wanna have to say it no more." He said softly.

She threw her hands up and nodded, "Fine..." She said softly.

He walked towards her and kissed her forehead, "I love you. Have a good day at school."

She smiled and pecked his lips, "I'll see you tonight." She said, watching him leave the room.

James worked 12 hour shifts on Monday, Wednesday and Friday, so he went to school on Tuesdays and Thursdays, and did his homework over the weekend. It was hard for Selena, but it had to be done.

adding this evening (:
