“I think I should do a test, to make sure.”
“You want me to go to the store to get it?”
“No, you stay here and finish dinner. I’ll be right back.”
I pecked his lips and removed my hands from around his neck. I walked down the hall and slipped my coat on. Forgetting my keys, I walked back into the kitchen and grabbed them off the table. My phone started vibrating against the oak wood and I picked it up. It was an unknown number, but I answered it anyway.
“Hello?” I asked curious as to who it was.
“Aundrea?” A female voice asked.
“This is she, who is this?”
“This is Kathy, Eric’s mom.”
“Hi.” I said unsure of why she was calling me. “Is there something wrong?”
I heard her take a deep breath. “Aundrea, Eric is in the hospital.” I gasped.
“What’s wrong?”
“He went to the doctor because of a fever and they rushed him from there to the E.R. by ambulance. His doctor said he had a pneumonia, and a fever as high as his is could be very dangerous. Since he’s been there, they’ve had to do a tracheotomy because his whole face swelled up, cutting off his airway.” Her voice started trembling. “He’s unconscious, and things aren’t looking good.”
I was shocked. I had no words. I felt my hands start shaking and my eyes started to tear up. “Oh my God.” was all I managed to get out.
“Did the doctors say if he was gunna make it?”
“They said if he stays with us over night, then that’s a good start. Nothing is guaranteed.”
“What about Jaiden?” I asked as tears threatened to leave my eyes. Eric had to live, my baby needed his dad.
“I don’t know, baby girl.” I could tell that Kathy was crying now. Her voice was cracking and her breathing was uneasy.
“Shh…Ms. Kathy. Calm down. I’ll be there with Jay as soon as I can, okay?”
“Alright. Be careful, Aundrea.”
“I will. Bye.”
I hung up my phone and stared at it. So many thoughts ran through my mind. So many unanswered questions. I plopped down in my seat and held my head in my hands.
“What’s wrong baby? What happened?”
Chris stood behind me and gently massaged my shoulders. I lifted my head and wiped my eyes.
“Eric is in the hospital, and things aren’t looking good.”
Chris’ face showed how shocked he was. “What happened?”
“He has a pneumonia and a very high fever. They had to do a tracheotomy because his air tube was cut off because of all the swelling, and now he’s unconscious.” I shook my head violently. “What about Jaiden, Chris? What if Eric doesn’t make it?”
Chris quickly wrapped his arms around me, bringing my into him for reassurance. “He’ll be okay, babe. Everything will be alright.”

“Upstairs sleeping.”
“You must’ve worn him out. What did ya’ll do?”
“We went to Chuck-e-Cheese then to Toys-R-Us.” He smirked and I rolled my eyes.
“Spoiling him already.”
“Of course.” He smiled wider, revealing his dimples. I felt my heart race speed up, that drove me wild. “I mean, he is gunna be my step son.”
A grin spread across my cheeks. “Can I ask you a question?”
“Ask away, even though that was a question you just asked me.”
“Shut up.” I laughed. “How many kids do you want to have?”
He stopped stirring the noodles and turned around, facing me. “Um…between 3 and 5. I love knowing the fact that I helped create something so beautiful, and that they get a chance at life. What about you… how many do you want?”
“About 3 or 4.” He smiled at me, and then turned around again, continuing to prepare dinner.
“Chris,”
“Hmm?” He answered, not turning around.
“..I-I think I’m pregnant.” He dropped the spoon and spun around. His facial expression was fuzzy, and I couldn’t make out how he was feeling.
“W-what?” He asked, still in shock.
“I’m not for sure, but I haven’t had my period the last two months and I’ve been getting sick in the morning.” I looked down at the tiled floor, scared of his reaction. When there was silence, I lifted my head up and stared at him. His face hadn’t changed and my heart started beating faster.
“Chris..? Say something.” I pushed the words out in a shaky voice.
“…I’m gunna have another kid…..we’re having a baby. BABY WE’RE HAVING A BABY!!” He ran towards me and lifted me out of my chair. I wrapped my legs around his waist as he hugged me tight. He leaned his head back and kissed me intensely. His fingers ran through my hair as we pulled away. He looked me directly in my eyes with a big grin on his face.
“I’m so happy baby.” He kissed me again. “I love you.”
I softly smiled. “I love you too. But Chris, it‘s not for sure yet. There‘s still a chance I‘m not pregnant.”
He put me back on the ground, not loosing grip of my waist. “Drea, you have all the signs. I’m pretty sure you are.”

“Drea!” She called to me, giving me a hug.
“Hey baby girl. How was school?” I asked as I grabbed her hand and started walking to the car.
“It was good. I’m hungry.”
“When we get home, we’ll go get something okay?”
“Okay.” I opened up the door for her, and she climbed in the backseat. I jogged over to the driver side, and got in, starting the car.

“I’m home!” Savannah’s voice echoed through the two story house.
“Come give Daddy some love!” Chris walked from the kitchen into the hallway. Savannah dropped her book bag and coat, running towards Chris. He picked her up and swung her around, then gave her a kiss on the cheek.
“You have fun at school today?” He asked as he put her down. I slid my coat off my shoulders and threw it on the back of the couch.
“Yeah.”
“You have any homework?” Savannah rolled her eyes.
“Math.”
“You better get on that before dinner, Princess. I’ll come check it when you’re done.”
She sighed. “Fine.” I watched as she came trotting down the hallway, grabbed her book bag off the floor, and made her way upstairs to her room.
“Now it’s your turn to give Daddy some love.” Chris said walking towards me. I smiled and wrapped my arms around him.
“Hey baby. I missed you.” I said after pecking his lips.
“I missed you too.” He said while caressing my back.
“It smells good in here,” The scent of a home cooked meal filled my nostrils. “what you making?”
“Your favorite. Spaghetti with Caesar salad and garlic bread.”
“Mmm. When do we eat?”
“It’s almost done.” He let go of me and walked back into the kitchen. I followed him and sat down at the table.
“Where’s my little man at?”

-Chapter 21
Using both of my hands, I grabbed my jacket and closed it tight against my body. I swiftly walked up to the double doors and released the tight grip on my jacket as I felt the heat of the building hit me in my face. I blew my breath in my hands and rubbed them together. I walked down the deserted hallway and into the main office. I quietly opened the door as I entered a silent room. All you heard was the faint pounding noise of the keys on the keyboard. A middle aged lady, with her long brown hair pulled back in a tight bun, sitting at the front desk noticed me and greeted me with a smile.
“Hello. How may I help you?”
I approached the desk and returned the nice smile. “Hello. I’m here to pick up Savannah Brown. Her father called and told the office, but I came in to make sure there was no mix ups.”
The lady looked down at her notes posted on her desk and nodded her head. “Yes, we got that message. I need to see an I.D. ma’am, just for security purposes.”
“Okay.” I slid my purse off my shoulder and unzipped it. I rummaged through it until I found my wallet, all the way at the bottom. I slipped my driver’s license out and handed it to her. She reached for it and checked the image, looking at me briefly. She wrote a quick note down, and handed my license back to me.
“Alright, Ms. Jones.” She smiled again. “Savannah will be notified that you are picking her up. School ends in ten minutes. You can sit here and wait if you would like.”
“Alright. Thank you.” I pulled my purse back up on my shoulder and sat in a chair next to the office door. I felt my phone vibrating in my jacket packet and I reached my hand in to get it. I slid it up, and a smile spread across my face when I read the text.
Hey baby girl. Did you have any problems getting Savannah from school?
I pressed reply and started typing back.
No, I’m just waiting for school to let out. Hows your day with Jaiden goin? Is he being good?
I closed my phone and set it in my lap, waiting for a reply. My leg bounced up and down as I grew impatient. My phone buzzed on my lap, and I picked it up.
Nah, he’s not being bad. We’re on our way home now. He‘s knocked out.
Lol. I’ll be there after I get Savannah.
I closed my phone just as the bell rang. I lifted up out of the seat and walked out of the office doors, and out into the intense, cold weather. I waited right in front of the bright blue doors, that way Savannah could find me easily. A few moments later, I saw her walk through with her pink hood over her head.

Chris put the car in park and we all got out. I opened up the back door and got Jaiden out of his car seat. I zipped up his jacket and he squirmed out of my arms, trying to catch up with Savannah who was way ahead of him. I chuckled as I watched him struggle to get where she was. I shut the door and waited for Chris to put his jacket on. Once he was ready, we followed the kids.
“So babe, have you heard anything from your lawyer?” I asked while we walked in the park. We decided to get some fresh air because it was a beautiful day outside. Although it was chilly, the wind wasn’t that bad. The kids were leading in front of us, making their way to the playground. Savannah was a few feet in front of Jaiden, and Jaiden was trying to run to keep up with her.
I linked my arm with Chris’ as he shoved his hands into his pockets. “Yeah. I talked to them earlier today.”
“And…what’d they say?” I asked looking up at him. He looked away and sighed heavily.
“He said that I shouldn’t have anything to worry about with Sam’s past, but there always is that hint of doubt because of mine. He said that the judge will probably ask me about it and I need to be fully prepared to take a crucial beating. He also told me that I will probably testify against Sam and so will Savannah. She’s gunna deny her use of drugs and they said they need me as well as proof. I know I can handle it, I’m just worried about my baby girl. The court date is in two weeks from Saturday.”
“Baby, Anna barely even knows her mom. You’re the only parent figure she’s ever had. You have nothing to worry about. I’m gunna be there with you the whole time.”
Chris cracked a smile and turned his head towards me. “I love you.”
“I love you too.”
We sat on the bench in front of the playground. I cuddled in closer to him as he wrapped his arm around me and watched our kids play on the playground.

I lazily opened up my eyes and quickly closed them again. The room was dark and quiet. I shifted on my side and rolled over to feel the cold sheets against my skin. I cracked open my right eye and realized I was alone in bed. I pushed myself up and swung my legs over the edge of the king size bed. I raked my fingers through my hair and walked over to the closet. I slid the door open and grabbed on of his hoodies. I slipped it over my head and raked my fingers through my hair.
The wood floor in the hallway creaked as I walked towards the stairs. I stopped when I heard faint laughter. I gently pushed the door open to see Savannah on the floor playing building blocks with Jaiden. I smiled softly as I watched them play. Savannah noticed me standing in the doorway and ran up to me, squeezing my legs in a hug.
“Morning Drea!” I kneeled down to her level and kissed her cheek.
“Good morning, Princess. You having fun?”
“Yeah.” I looked up when I heard tiny footsteps running towards me.
“There’s Mama’s boy!” I reached out and picked him up off the ground. I gave him a kiss on the forehead. “You playing with Van-Van?” I asked while setting him back on his own two feet. He shook his head smiling, showing his dimples and six teeth.
“You guys hungry?” I asked as they went back to playing.
“Yeah! I want pancakes.” Savannah said while she placed a block on top of another.
“Alright. I’ll come get ya’ll when it’s done.”
I stood up from off the ground and made my way down the stairs. I held onto the railing as I went down all fourteen steps. I reached the bottom and walked into the kitchen. Chris was sitting at the kitchen table on the phone. He looked up when he heard me walk into the kitchen and smirked. I walked up behind him and wrapped my arms around his shoulders. I placed a soft kiss on his cheek and went over to the pantry and got out the pancake mix. I felt his eyes on me as I reached up into the cabinet and got a bowl out to pour the mix in. I grabbed the measuring cup and poured water in it, adding it to the bowl. I opened the utensil drawer and grabbed a big spoon and began stirring.
After the mix was prepared, I bent down and grabbed a skillet from the drawer. I turned the stove on and sprayed the skillet with Pam. I poured a good amount of mix onto it and waited while it cooked. I turned around and placed my hands on the counter listening to Chris on the phone. He must have been talking to somebody professional because he was using correct grammar.
I turned back to the skillet and flipped the pancake over to let the other side cook. Once it finished, I got it off the skillet and poured some more mix. Chris hung up the phone just as I was flipping it. I heard him walk towards me and I felt his strong, masculine arms wrap around my waist. He moved the hair off my neck and kissed the base of my neck. I rested my head on his shoulder and continued to cook the pancakes.
“Do you know what you’re doing to me?” He asked huskily in my ear.
“No, I don‘t. What am I doing to you baby?” I smirked as he placed kisses on the back of my neck.
“Coming in here wearing some short ass shorts and my hoodie. You know what happens when I see you in my clothes.” I felt him smirk against my cheek.
“We got two kids upstairs.” He rubbed his hand down my left arm and grabbed my hand.
“I got you when they take their nap.” He grabbed my ring finger and twirled the ring around. He brought my hand up to his lips and kissed my ring finger. I smiled softly and turned around, wrapping my arms around his neck.
“So, have you picked a date yet Mrs. Brown?” My little smiled turned into a wide grin that spread across my face from ear to ear.
“Say that again.” I whispered as I closed my eyes.
“Mrs. Brown.” I opened them back up and looked into Chris’ deep brown hues. I felt my heart skip a beat.
“That feels so good to say.”
“It’s good to hear.” I leaned in and pecked his lips. I pulled away and went back to cooking, with Chris still holding onto me.
