I sat in the backyard of the dusty ol’ 2 family house watching Adrian’s 4 little one’s Tyrae, Lisa, Gerald, and Inesha run around. I watched them play with the hose and form mud puddles in the garden. I saw Inesha run towards my little 2 year old A`Myra and tried to touch her.

Me: (plucking Inesha’s hand off): Your hands are dirty! Don’t touch her!

She stuck out her tongue and ran away.

Adrian: Why don’t you let them kids play?

Me: I can’t let her touch her like that! Besides, A`Myra’s been battling this cold for the past 3 days!

Adrian: You’re so protective of her! Let her have some freedom!

Me: Well, ex-cuse me for trying to be a good mother!

I opened up the diaper bag and took out A`Myra’s medicine and admistired it to her. I looked at the time. 8:00.

Me: Look, I don’t have time to argue with you all the time, I have to go to the child services center to set an appointment for A`Myra’s doctor.

Adrian: Well go! And don’t go back.

Me: Okay….See you at 3.

I scooped up A`Myra and headed to the center.

When we got there, I signed in and sat A`Myra in the seat next. Her nose was running. I carefully took out a baby wipe and wiped away her “elephant boogers”..

Secretary: Ms. Jameson.

I walked up to the desk..

Secretary: The next time Dr. Lee has left is February 10th. Will you be busy?

Me: No, no, I’m free. What time.

Secretary: At 9:30 A.M.

I have school then? Oh well, A`Myra is more than that.

Me: Okay….Sign me up.

Secretary: Okay, see you on Tuesday!

I left the building and set on my way to Chris` house so he and his mother could take care of A`Myra.
When we were 13, we were best friends. One rainy day, I stayed over at his house and we were all alone. He was telling me about how everyone in school was doing it and that we should try it. We were both clueless of the consequences.
He always listened to his brother Mijo who was 2 years older and us and stole one of his rubbers, we tried to figure out how to put it on but it went all wrong so we went unprotected. It felt weird doing it on his Michael Jackson bed sheets. Afterwards, we never spoke of it again. Until, I misted my period. We searched the nurses office searching for pamphlets saying missed periods were normal. It was all okay until the next month I missed it too. Then, I was starting to show. My uncle suggested I’d go see a doctor. I did and that’s when I found out A`Myra was on her way.

I’m now in front of Chris’ doorstep. I knocked on the door. No answer. I called Chris with the last of the minutes on my phone. I heard a girl in the background. I wonder who the hell that is?
