Simply Beautiful

I held a firm grip on the can of gold paint and began to move my wrist in swift upward motions repeatedly until one of the areas of my new piece was completed to my satisfaction. It had been in my head for days. Forming itself, putting its own pieces together. It took me about two hours to get it out on paper. It was a beautiful work of art. One of my favorites.

Al Green was blasting through my earphones. I always listened to music while I created something, it kept me from getting easily distracted, I flowed with the rhythm of the music and that was sure to get me through the entire process. I grinned as I finished up the last bit of it. I released a breath and stood back, removing the scarf that I used to avoid inhaling the fumes, from around my face and allowed the chilly fall day's fresh air to finally hit my face after two hours.

The longer I stared at it the more I fell in love with it. It felt like I had created it for a reason that remained unknown. Nonetheless its perfect, and I can feel myself becoming inspired again. I took a look to my left at some other artist's painting that had caught my eye when I got here. It was breathtaking..alluring. It was something surprisingly similar to what I had came here to paint today. I had to stop and marvel at it, like I did every other day with their art. Whoever 'Breezy' is, he is surely talented. I would have to keep my eye out for him or her. For as long as I've been coming here I have never seen who the spot beside mine belonged to. All I knew was that everyday I was here, another one of their stunning murals were too.

I decided to do something daring today and join my art with his. Though I'm most likely gonna get told off for crossing some lines doing so, who would I be not to take a risk? I'm an artist, its what I do on a daily basis.

"Simply beautiful.." I said to nothing in particular.

I pulled my phone out of my pocket and snapped a quick picture of it. I then closed the camera application in my iPhone and glanced at the time. It read, 9:45AM. I had a solid 45 minutes to get to work. I bent over and hastily gathered all of the paint cans, tossing them into my duffel bag, then grabbed my backpack that contained my work clothes and cleared out from the alley.

"Be back later" i said to the walls as i strolled by them. All of a sudden having a strange gut feeling that today would be one to remember.

Lmao why was I legit laughing at that whole scene. Something so petty me and bf would argue about lol

Run It....

"We need to teach this lil girl some manners. She throwin' up on everybody!" Yelled Chris as he wiped Alayah's mouth with her bib. I threw him a look questioning his sanity.

"She's an infant." I said.

"Barely. You ever look into this girl's eyes? She knows things I'm telling you." He spoke. I laughed and joined him on the couch.

"You need to go and get dressed. We need to leave soon." I said looking at my watch. It was going on 11:00AM and everyone would be at the park soon for the reunion. Chris and I were the last ones to leave the hotel thanks to Alayah who threw up on all of her clothes.

"What's the time?" He asked looking down at my phone as I texted my Aunt Cameron to see if she and everyone else had arrived at the park yet.

"10:49. I answered locking my phone and tossing it on the bed. I reached for Alayah who was dressed in a different outfit and ready to go. Chris stood up and left the room to get ready.

"Daddy takes forever to get dressed. He's like a girl." I smiled.

"Daddy can hear everything!" Yelled Chris from the bathroom. I laughed earning a grin from Alayah. I kissed her lips twice before standing up and pacing the room with her.

"Put on some black pyramid today!" I said.

"Hell nah. That's casual wear, this is an occasion!" He answered.

"It's a barbecue Chris." I retorted.

"But I wanna look nicer than everyone else!" He whined.

"Why! That's gonna take foreverrrr!" I whined back.

"Because! Now hush! Play some music or something. Calm ya rushin' ass." He told me. I rolled my eyes and hooked my hone up to the portable dock he had brought along on the trip. I scrolled down my playlist and pushed play. "Otha Fish" by The Pharcyde began to play.

My phone rang with a text back from my Aunt Cameron, I read it quickly.

<strong>yes darling, im here! hurry up though! food is out and its going fast!</strong>

I smacked my lips and paused the music.

"Chris hurry up the food is gonna be gone by the time we get there!" I yelled, annoyed. I heard him smack his lips.

"Man, I'm comin'! Give me a second damn! Lay's the one who held us up in the first place!" He argued. I could hear the attitude in his voice and immediately grew irritated with him.

"You don't need to look fancy for this function though, so I don't understand!" I returned. Chris rushed out of the bathroom shoving his shirt over his head. His face full of annoyance and a hint of anger.

"Yo Mags, real s*** you know I hate when people f***in' rush me. I JUST started getting dressed like, damn. Give me a minute." He said standing there for a moment. I went quiet only glaring at him and his outfit that he attempted to put together on his body.

"DON'T cuss in front of her." I replied shortly referring to Alayah. His face went soft for a moment as he looked to Alayah who lay asleep on my shoulder.

"You need to fix ya face while you lookin' at me. Just cause you don't like wakin' up early don't mean you gotta throw daggers at me. I'm just trynna look good for your family." He explained quickly. I rolled my eyes.

I had skipped breakfast, and my empty stomach was really beginning to get to me.

"Relax yourself." He spat before he disappeared into the bathroom again.

"Punkass." I whispered beneath my breath, pacing the room and sending a reply to my Aunt.

<strong>save chris and i a plate pleasseee?</strong>

I locked my phone again as I sat down and waited for Chris, trying to gather my patience.

Their relationship is so beautiful man! They've came such a long way and the love Chris shows her is crazy! Almost makes me jealous like they're real lol

Love this story so much!

Awwwwwwww, love love love! RUN IT!

I walked up to the club entrance behind Chris who tightly held my hand. This had been the first appearance he had made in Toronto since he quit the business. I was especially nervous about how tonight would go, but still, I wore a brave face. The bouncer let us through as soon as he laid eyes on Chris and we immediately passed through the doors, wanting to avoid paparazzi. I lifted my head once we entered and was immediately greeted with the smell of perspiration and liquor, "My Story" by R.Kelly bumped throughout the entire club as we made our way through it and up to the V.I.P. section. We were greeted by bodyguards belonging to Aubrey and they let us through. I spotted my cousins, dancing around the table full of empty shots with low, glassy, red eyes and bottles in their hands. I smiled and shook my head.

"Eyyy!" Yelled Aubrey from across the way. Chris led us over to him and dapped him up. He then hugged me tightly.

"Welcome to my city, Kindle." Greeted Aubrey who was clearly under the influence of Ciroc and other liquors. I rolled my eyes.

"I've been here before Drake." I said not wanting to use his personal name in a large crowd. He laughed loosely.

"Not with me though. I'm about to show ya cousins how we turn up! Chris you drinkin'?!" Chris shook his head no with a smile.

"Nah man." He answered.

"Good man, good man!" Said Aubrey.

"Aight y'all . Grab a beverage then! Don't be still let's go!" He said pumping his arms as he danced away from us. I laughed and looked over to Chris.

"You can if you want, I'll drive back." I answered. Chris shook his head.

"Not feeling it tonight. I just wanna make sure you good." He answered and pulled me over to the bar for a drink. He ordered two cokes and I took mine while bobbing my head to the music. I appreciated the fact that Chris wanted to remain sober with me tonight. He was really trying this time around and it made me happy.

"I miss mamas." He pouted. I smiled lovingly at him.

"I miss her too, She's fine though. Let's just have fun. It's our first time out since having her." I said to him smiling as her face popped into my mind for the billionth time that night.

"If they play a Rihanna song what you gon' do?" He asked with a goofy smile. I had to laugh.

"Put in on you better than she ever did." I teased with a wink. Chris licked his lips seductively. I looked away feeling the heat in my cheeks. He still had the same effect on me. I smiled before I sipped from my straw.

"Let's just dance all night, okay?" I spoke hoping he wanted to be as lost in the music as I wanted to be. He studied me for a moment before a big grin spread across his face.

"I can definitely be down with that. We gon' be around they drunk asses anyway." He said pointed back to Brooke who was twerking on Aubrey. He wore the goofiest smirk as she bent down in front of him. I laughed at the scene.

"Alright then." I smirked putting on a smile as we stood by the bar.

The music switched to "Bounce It" by Juicy J and my shoulders bounced to the music. I loved this song.

"You gon' dance tonight right?. You standin' there shakin' ya shoulders instead of shakin' that ass for me." Said Chris. I smacked his shoulder playfully and rested my now empty cup down on the bar next to his.

"You can't even handle my ass. Last time we were on the dance floor, I broke you." I smiled coyly. Chris let his head fall back and his mouth grin as he laughed.

"You think so?" He said.

"I know so." I returned with the same smile.

"Let's go say hi to everyone real quick." I said grabbing his hand.

"Aight." He followed behind me. I was instantly ambushed by Jayda and Lisa.

"Oh my goodness! If this the life you live then girl you are soooo lucky!" Slurred Lisa. I laughed amused with her as she danced.

"Y'all having fun?" I asked. They nodded and thanked me. I looked over to Derek who danced with Jones and Aubrey on either side of him. He seemed to be as faded as everyone else. I wasn't worried about them; I knew Aubrey would take care of them.

"Look after them!" I told them when I heard the DJ switch the music's genre to soca. I smiled hard.

I had gone to the club for the first time when I was eighteen, in Toronto with Derek and a few other friends that I had lost touch with and it was the best experience ever, based solely on the music they played. The environment was only a plus. The people here were pleasant and alive in a way I'd never seen. Chris looked down at me.

"You think you could break me to this music?" He smiled.

"Um, hello! I come from a west indian family. Of course I can. I'm programmed to do that!" I laughed over the music as did he.

"We goin' down! Y'all comin'?" Yelled Chris. Aubrey looked over at us.

"What?!" He asked.

"He said we're going down! Come on!" I smiled. They all rushed behind us.

"Just sayin', I ain't never seen you break out to some reggae or soca before. Don't disappoint girl!" smiled Chris. He laughed as I pulled him down the steps to the V.I.P. that led to the main dance floor. Fans gathered around us as we parted through the crowd. He respectfully turned down pictures as we made our way through. I loved the vibe around us. People were dancing with each other, no one was still or paying attention to their problems. Everyone was just dancing.

Chris let go of my hand and spread his arms out making a wide circle around us. I shook my head suddenly shy. I didn't know he'd have the entire floor watching us. "The Fog" by Machel Montano began to play and Chris instantly lost himself. He looked at me with a sly grin.

<em>And when I reach downtown with this thunder now. Touchdown, I want to jump around!"</em>

"Don't disappoint!" He said as he began to grind and wine to the soca music. I looked around at everyone who cheered loudly for us. A hand pushed me into the center next to Chris and I turned on my heels to tell them off, but found Brooke there.

<em>That's why I love powder! Everybody fete'n is powder! Everybody gettin' it powder! Everybody catchin' it powder! This is how we celebraaaate! And you cannot get awaaaay!</em>

"...Dance!" She yelled along with everyone else. I shook my head not able to believe that I was stuck in this predicament. I watched Chris as he moved like fluid and like nobody was watching and decided to do the same thing.

Tyson Kindle is no punk.

I began to roll my waistline to the rhythm and immediately felt comfortable. I smiled as Bunji Garlin's "Ready" came on and walked over to Chris who watched me carefully.

<em>"We ready for the rooooad!"</em>

I bent over just as the chorus came on and began to grind into him and wine against his crotch skillfully. I never showed this side of me often. So, tonight I was sure that I did a good job. Chris took hold of my hips and rolled against me to the music. He never lost the rhythm and kept up really well. I smiled as I looked back at him and held my knees. The song ended and the DJ gave us both a shout out as the crowd went crazy. I turned around and captured his lips in a kiss. His grin was wider than ever. The DJ went back to the music and everyone else-- back to dancing.

<em>"Raise! Your! Hands and let goooo! Put your hand in the air! Everybody! Raise! Your! Hands and let goooo!"</em>

At one point everyone's hands went up in the air, doing what the song lyrics told them to do. Chris and I followed along and did the same, with faces full of content and love for the moment. We swayed side to side to the music along with everyone else who stood incredibly close to each other. Strangers were pleasant with each other. Some wrapped arms around each other while others began singing to each other. I looked over to find Aubrey, Derek, Jayda, Jones, Michael, Brooke, Lisa and Tray doing the same with total strangers as well.

I loved what I saw and adored the people in the club for allowing us to have this moment.

Chris wrapped his arms around me as I lost myself in the music. I couldn't remember the last time I had genuinely smiled so much. I had to admit to myself that I was happy I had come down here.

This night was the greatest distraction I had ever known and Chris was the strongest rock I had ever owned.

"You quiet.." Said Chris as we rode in the car over to the club where we would meet with my cousins and Aubrey. Michael, Tray and Brooke had volunteered to pick up some of them and had left earlier than Chris and I.

"Just stuck in my head, can't take myself out." I admit not wanting to leave him in the dark. He switched gears as we shot forward slightly in our seats.

"You miss your father and your brother.." He spoke already knowing. I looked over at him wondering how.

"I could see the distance in your face at Nona's. I saw you looking at the picture over the fireplace with you, Bryce and your pops. You just kinda pulled back and wandered off after that." He told me softly keeping his eyes on the road. I sighed.

"I'm alright. It's my mom I'm worried about. She had a breakdown earlier, before I left her room. I haven't seen her that way in a just hurts seeing your mom that way you know?" I said. Chris nodded in understanding.

"I know.." He answered

"I wanted to stay with her but she wasn't having it." I said.

"She just needs some time for herself, baby. Mrs. Charlie's a fighter. She'll be fine." He reassured me. I nodded and exhaled.

"What do you need me to do for you?" He asked. I looked out of the window at the passing lights as they blended together.

"I just need you to be my rock.." I answered.

"I can do that." He answered as we continued to drive down the street.

Run It...

Run It!!

I love this story! Run it!

RUN IT!!!!

I knocked silently on the bathroom door of my mother's hotel room. Alayah lay asleep in the bed surrounded by pillows.

"Come." Answered my mother. I turned the knob and entered the room silently. I shut the door quietly behind me and turned to look at my mother who sat on the bathroom toilet, her pants pulled up and head in her hands.

She was having a moment.

"Oh mama.." I breathed, feeling my heart crack slightly for her. I hated witnessing the sadness in my mother.

It killed me inside.

I knelt down next to her on the cold ground and held her head, pulling it away from her hands. The lone tear was too slow as I caught it with my finger.

"I missed them so much today." She cried harder now. I frowned deeply knowing who she was talking about.

"I did too." I said.

The <a href="">picture</a> in her lap caught my attention. I took it into my hands and instantly felt a shiver down my spine. My mother and father smiled happily in the picture, embracing each other with love and laughter.

"When was this taken?" I asked. She sniffed and smiled sadly.

"The wedding reception. I changed out of my dress because it was so heavy." She chuckled.

"At that exact moment, he announced that we were pregnant with you." She cried again.

"He said "She gon' have her mother's beautiful eyes, and a captivatin' smile that reaches them and she's gonna have my everything else. She gon' do big things." And you do, you do! He was right." She shook with tears. I looked deep into the picture, at the look in their eyes, the content.

My dad looked so happy and in the prime of his life. I couldn't stand the loss all of a sudden as the tears threatened to rush down, but still I held it in wanting to be strong for my mother.

"Daddy's with you mom. I know he is. I can feel him." I said to her.

"I know he is I can feel him too!" She bawled harder.

"That's what hurts the most! I can't- I can't see him. I just want to see him again one more time and I just want to hold my son in my arms again." She spoke. I shook my head.

"It's okay mom, I'll stay here with you as long as you need me--"

"No, no no." She wiped her tears away and stood from the toilet causing me to stand up straight.

"You go. I'll be fine with Alayah. I just had a weak moment I'm fine I promise." She spoke.

"...Are you sure?" I asked cringing sadly.

"Yes Tyson, go. Please. Have fun tonight. No drinking." She pointed at me. I rolled my eyes.

"I know mom. I'm breastfeeding." I smiled and placed a loving kiss on both of her temples.

"I love you with everything." I told her.

"I love you too baby." She smiled brokenly. That was the last face I saw her make before I shut the door behind me. I stood outside of it, stock still for a moment.

I felt bad leaving her there, but I knew she needed time to be alone and with Alayah finally sleeping through the night, I knew she would be okay.

I walked down the hall to my room, with thoughts of my father on my mind. I wondered what he and my brother were currently doing in the world we couldn't see.

The sun was setting and gathering was almost over, as cars drove down the street away and onto another street and people began to exit the house in an orderly fashion.

I stood in the middle of the driveway with my friends and Uncle Devan who skillfully bounced a basketball between his legs and spoke about random topics. A voice pulled my attention away from them and I looked over to the porch to find my mother there talking with my Nona. I smiled adoringly at the both of them and turned to Chris.

"Take Layah for a minute bae. I just wanna go and talk to my Nona really quick and thank her." I told him. He easily took his daughter from my grasp and placed tiny pecks all over her face. She was especially calm today; no fussing or fighting with anyone. She took well with every member of the family despite the unfamiliarity between them.

As I neared the two chatting women, they turned to face me hearing my footsteps. They smiled and my Nona took me under her arm. I snuggled into her side and leaned my head on her shoulder.

"She's still super attached to you." Smiled my mother.

"I wouldn't have it any other way, especailly after so long." Spoke my grandmother. I looked up at her.

"You gonna need me to do anything for the reunion party on friday? Pick up anything or cook?" I asked wanting to be of help.

"Oh don't worry about that. If I need you to bring some things over to the park I'll just call you." She spoke.

"Aight then. Good, cause I'm too lazy anyway." I joked. She patted my butt softly and I giggled and placed a gentle kiss on her cheek.

"See you on Friday, Nona. Love you." I smiled.

"Alright baby. Take care-wait where's Alayah? Let me say bye to my baby girl really quick!" She grinned and walked down the porch and over to Chris who held our daughter. I laughed and followed behind her and my mother.

She was still so young, even after seventy years.

"Alayah baby! Come say bye to Nona! Come!" She smiled taking her out of Chris' hold. He smiled showing off his deep dimples and watched the two interact. He threw a glance in my direction quickly to make sure I was watching and then looked back at them. I crossed my arms over my chest as I walked over to them. Uncle Devan, Michael and Tray were in a deep conversation over basketball. I rolled my eyes at the boys.

"Yo, we hittin' up any parties tonight or what?" Asked Derek as he walked out of the house and over to me. I turned to face him and shrugged. He was accompanied by Lisa, a girl I had assumed was his girlfriend judging by the way they had locked eyes over the table this morning and the way they held hands in front of everyone. I smiled kindly at her, happy for Derek. He was such a good person and deserved someone to love.

"I can get my mom to watch Layah and we could go if you want to--"

"Want to? Nigga look at the connects you got! Of course I want to. It's not everyday I'm in And I'm not using you just for that by the way. I just really wanna party with my family. It's been too long." Spoke Derek. I laughed believing him.

"Aight, I'll get Chris to set something up and we'll holler at you later tonight. Don't make plans." I pointed at him. He nodded and kissed my temple. I hugged Lisa tightly and said a quick goodbye before they walked off.

"Later Tee." He spoke quickly before they continued down the street to his car.

"Ey! Marie!" I rolled my eyes at Jones and looked up to answer him.

"Yes, Jones?" I answered with a tired smirk. He had the biggest of grins on his face as he walked up to me.

"Why you treatin' me so cold girl? What I do to you?" He asked feigning hurt. I smiled unable to stay annoyed with his goofy attitude.

"Because you're annoyinggg! You always got somethin' to say!" I laughed and fell into his arms hugging him goodbye.

"Girl, please. Don't act like we weren't besties before you grew boobies." He said earning a shove from me.

"See!" I yelled. Jones laughed earning one from me as well. He kissed my temple.

"Good to see you doin' good for yourself, boo. Your family is beautiful." He spoke on a serious note. I looked at him genuinely happy with his kind words.

"Thank you Jones. You gonna come out tonight if we go?" I asked. He nodded absently and his forehead creased as someone else grabbed his attention. He looked over my shoulder causing me to follow his gaze.

"Ey Unc! Uncle Leroy! Don't leave yet, you my ride home! Ey!" He yelled out, trying to catch the attention of the speeding car that had taken off down the street. I shook my head at him.

"See I tell you all the time. Stop disrespecting your elders and what do you do? The opposite. Now look!" I scolded my cousin. He pouted and looked back at me while scratching his head.

"Uh...y'all got room for one more?" He asked. I laughed.

"My mom's car. Go talk to her." I chuckled.

"Ey, Aunt Charlie!" He said as he brushed passed me. I laughed as my mother turned to talk with her nephew in-law. My Nona handed Alayah back to Chris after placing gentle kisses all over her face and then went to place pecks on everyone's cheeks.

"I will see you all on Friday right?" She asked with hope.

"Of course, we will be there. Thank you for today, Mrs. Odetta." Spoke Brooke with a bright smile on her face. She had instantly fallen in love with my grandmother when she met her as did the rest of my friends.

"Alright then. Michael boy! You feeling converted yet after today?" She said wrapping an arm around Michael's waist. Michael gave a lighthearted chuckle and grinned down at my grandmother.

"Yes ma'am." He answered.

"Call me Nona, child." She patted his chest as they let go of each other.

"Okay, Nona." Said Michael, sweetly.

Brooke, Tray, Jones and my mother walked back over to the car they had arrived in and piled into it ready to leave while Michael gladly took his goddaughter out of Chris' hands and walked over to our rented car and buckled Alayah into her car seat. Uncle Devan walked around my grandma to say goodbye to me. He pulled me into a big hug and rubbed my back softly.

"Really good to see you doing so well. Your father would be really proud of you and your progress. Bryce too." He whispered into my ear. I wanted to cry as the words processed, but held it in. I had no idea that I would miss my father and brother this much.

But then again, Toronto reminded me so much of them.

"Thank you Uncle D. Really good to see you too, I missed you." I told him back as we parted. He walked over to Chris and dapped him up before walking back into the house. I looked over to Chris who was now exchanging words with my Nona.

"It was really nice to finally meet the young man who captured the beautiful heart belonging to my granddaughter. You take care of them and I'll see all you on Friday. Okay?" She spoke to Chris, her accent turning thick for a moment.

"Of course. It was great to finally meet you too Nona." He smiled and kissed her cheek. I waved and followed behind him, down the driveway. I waved at my Nona.

"Friday!" She yelled while walking back to the house.

"Friday!" I repeated with a smile before I got into the car.

You're back!!!

That moment with her grandmother was sweet. I'm happy she went back to Toronto. I hope the rest of the week is peaceful as this moment

Run it!

After breakfast, I had excused myself from the family.

I sat quietly in one of the spare bedrooms of my grandmothers cozy home. A feeling of nostalgia fell over me gently as memories of me running around with my brother and cousins came back to me one by one. I wore a faint smile as my eyes fell over a picture of Bryce and I on the dresser near the window. Alayah played with my fingers as time ticked into the silent room. Music bumped under my feet from downstairs. I had excused myself to have a moment of peace with myself and my offspring.

"This used to be your grandpas room mama.." I spoke softly to her, looking into her wide eyes.

A sudden knock at the door pulled my attention towards it.

"Come in!" I said. The door opened slowly revealing my grandmother. I smiled softly as her slipper covered feet walked carefully over to Alayah and I.

"Hey Nona." I smirked. The bed sunk as she took a seat next to us.

"Hey baby." She smiled lovingly. The room fell quiet as she made her presence known.

"I thought you would have outgrown this habit by now. Guess I was wrong?" She spoke with a smile in her voice. I watched her confused.

"What do you mean?" I asked. She planted her gaze on her great granddaughter who stared curiously back at her.

"When you were younger, you used to leave the happiest of moments during a function just to have some time for yourself. Just disappear...I never understood why though. I would go look around the house for you, your mama never knew where you would disappear to. Your daddy did though..He'd say "oh don't worry mama, she's just taking a moment to catch herself. She'll be back a minute." I'd ask, "well where did she go Gordon?!" and he'd put on this smirk and he'd tell me, "To my bedroom."" Said my grandma. I grinned remembering the days.

"I stopped doing that after I moved out to LA. I guess it's just whenever I'm here or in new york..around family." I spoke.

"Your daddy used to do it all the time you know." She smiled. I looked over to her surprised.

"He did?" I asked.

"He did. You two were so alike.. You would leave this world and go to your own any chance you got." She gave a lighthearted chuckle. I smiled thinking about my father.

"I miss him a lot more being here.." I admit to her.

"Is that why you're so afraid to be here. Chris tells me you were jumpy because of the "dysfunction" around here.." She spoke raising her brow. I looked down at my daughter.

"I just didn't want to come here and be reminded of such a big loss. I'm sorry. I mean our family is dysfunctional, but not as much as I had painted it out to be.." I answered.

"It's okay sweet pea." She said bringing my head to her mouth. She placed a gentle kiss on my temple, her way of comforting me. I smiled and nodded okay.

It always worked.

"So this is Alayah Kelly Brown?" She asked as she stared into her eyes. I could see her fall in love with Alayah in that exact moment.

"This is her.." I smiled watching Alayah bore into my grandmothers soul. Her tiny lips curled up in the slightest way, painting a smile on her baby face. My grandmother cooed silently at her with the same smile that I had grown to love.

"Well come and say hello then." Laughed my Nona as she reached out her arms to hold Alayah. Without hesitation I let her go and watched the two interact with love for the first time.

"Such a beautiful one.." She whispered to Alayah. I grinned at the two.

I had never seen a line so silver before.

Run it!!

"We're gonna need more chairs. Jones." Called my grandmother. Jones hopped up in his seat as if he were startled.

"Uh, y-yes ma'am?" He stuttered. His voice softened and his eyes filled with fear. I shook my head.

"Go on outside in the back, you and Derek, and grab some of those chairs and bring em' on in here for everyone without one." She told him. I watched as Derek stood to his feet from his seat at the table and walked around it.

"How y'all doin'? I'm Derek, Ty's cousin and Caelen's son. Nice to meet y'all." He introduced himself as he hugged each of them. He walked over to me with a smile.

"Look at you. A mom and whatnot. Come here girl." He smirked pulling me into a hug. Derek and I used to be really close when we were growing up all through high school back in New York.

"I missed you." I grinned sadly.

"Missed you too man. S'been a while where you been hiding other than in the tabloids with ya boy..or should I say men." He shot at me. I mocked laughter but quickly stopped and gave him a straight face which caused him to laugh.

"I'm playin', happy to see you. We gon' catch up. Pleasure to meet y'all." He said as he excused himself to get chairs. My group of friends glanced my way with lost looks in their eyes. I sighed deflating my shoulders.

"I told you. Dysfunctional." I spoke.

"You weren't jokin'." Voiced Tray as his eyes fell on Jones who struggled to pull the meshed door open to get out into the backyard.

"God DAMMIT!" Cursed Jones as he fought with the door.

"Nope." I shook my head.

"Everybody relax and shut up! I wanna make a toast!" Yelled my Uncle Devan as he stood from his seat at the island in the kitchen. His glass of orange juice was high over his head. I rested my plate on my lap and held my glass in the air as well as everyone else. Chris and I sat near a wall with our sleeping daughter in her carseat at our feet.

"Well get on with it then Devan, ain't nobody stoppin' you." Spoke his wife. The crowd erupted with chuckled as Uncle Devan smacked his lips.

"Woman, hush." He spoke. I chuckled.

"Alright, so obviously were toasting to the coming together our families after..years...about three to be exact. Anyways I'm glad to see everyone could make it. I know we haven't thrown one of these in a while, but unfortunately everyone was busy living their lives so..we gon' make up for it this week am I right?" He asked, a round of applause was sound in the room.

"What else.. I see some Branding's in the building, shout out to Charlie and her sisters for comin' out! It's been forever, good to see y'all, I know Cam's flying out on Thursday." Said my uncle as he pointed out my mother and her two sisters. I smiled as they all blushed.

"It means a lot to me and Mama to have you all here after three lets keep this positive and lets love one another and have fun aight?!" Grinned my uncle as he rested a hand on my Nona's shoulder.

"To family!" He rose his glass higher.

"Family!" Yelled everyone at the same time.
