Damn Good Friends

I lied still, staring up at the ceiling; the feelings of regret and shame ever so present in my soul as I looked over to Michael, who lay peacefully sleeping, exhausted from what we just encountered.

I sighed to myself, already disappointed that somehow he was able to get me in his bed, again. Only for the next day and the rest of the week to more than likely not hear from him. I don't know how I always end up in this compromising position, but each time I would hope that something would change. That he actually meant the words he said and really wanted this to be more.

But he never did.

I swallowed the last bit of pride I could muster and carefully removed myself from the bed, ensuring that I didn't wake him.

I threw on my clothes that I had worn to the party that night in haste, and hurried out of his room, making my way downstairs and exiting his house.

He had driven us over here because I rode with my roommates to the party. I kicked myself realizing the time and that the buses stopped running this late. I was in for a long walk home.

The walk could give me some time to clear my head, and truly annualize what all this meant, or just to ridicule myself for not listening to my Better Judgment in the first place.

He was always my Better Judgment.

He gave me that warning look, that he always gives before I run off somewhere with Michael. My hopeless romantic ass always would anyway. Thinking maybe, this time would end differently for me.

I cursed to myself as I continued to walk a fast and steady pace to my house near campus. I wasn't as alarmed as I normally would be walking in the city at this time of night. There was a calm over me.

Just as the feeling came, my phone vibrated against my palm.

I looked at the screen, seeing the goofy pic of him and I as the caller ID for his number. A sigh of relief escaped my lips before I answered it.

"Where you at man! I check ya room and you still not home. It's 3 AM Quinn.." He nagged before I even had a chance to speak.

"Walking on 4th-" I was soon cut off.

"His punk ass got you..." He paused, I assumed taking a deep breath. "I'm on my way."

The call ended and I frowned bracing myself for the lecture to come once I got picked up.

Within five minutes his car pulled up beside me, as I reached a stopped sign on the sidewalk. I looked over at his car worriedly as he rolled the window down.

"You better get in this car girl.." He smirked while reaching his arm over to open the door for me. I smiled softly before hopping inside. Internally grateful not to have to be on my feet any longer.

I flashed him a fake smile before burying my head deep in my hood and looking out the window. Finally letting the lone tear escape my eye.

Chris was always there to save me in my time of trouble and despair. Maybe if I actually listened to him more often, I wouldn't always end up in this position.

I was thankful for my Better Judgment however, no matter how much I ignored his advice.

"..Wanna talk about it?" He finally asked, breaking the silence that had consumed the vehicle. I shook my head wearily.

I could see him give a nod of understanding through my peripheral vision and allowed the silence to consume us once more.

We reached our house, and Chris pulled up in the alley that led to our backyard to park in the makeshift driveway. He gave a loud and obnoxious yawn while turning the car off as I crossed my eyes at the annoying habit.

We stepped out of the car and I swiftly went to the back door, trying to avoid any glares from Chris about the decision I made tonight.

The house was dark, meaning our other two roommates had retreated to their rooms for the evening.

Good, I thought to myself. Last thing I wanted to hear was their mouths on top of Chris' daggers of disappointing looks.

I didn't wait for Chris to enter before I went upstairs to my room and instantly began stripping my layers of clothing, preparing to wash off all memory of tonight in the shower.

I grabbed my towel and the clothes I planned to wear and waltzed into our bathroom. After my shower, I felt more calm and relaxed and ready to put this Friday night behind me.

As I entered the room, I wasn't at all shocked to see Chris sleeping peacefully on 'his side' of my bed. He was the biggest baby whenever he came home and I wasn't there. Always wanted to be up under me to make sure I was safe and not leave his sight. He's been protective of me like that since we were little.

I shook my head before tossing my towel and dirty clothes in the hamper and jumping into my side of my bed. Chris instantly draped his arm over my torso, careful not to pull me close.

"Goodnight Quinn. Luh you." He said softly while getting himself more comfortable.

I walked into the house after dropping off Chris’ lunch. I stepped into the foyer to find Andrea sitting at the counter, eating ramen noodles out of a bowl while typing on her laptop. All the food Chris and I bought over the weekend and her ass would be eating noodles.

I shook my head at the sight before dropping my purse on the table. Andrea looked up and smiled softly at me. “Sup boo. How was lunch with your darrlinngg Christopher?” She asked in a goofy tone.

I chuckled before taking a seat next to her at the counter. “It was nice. The stadium he practices in is so dope. And his friends on the team are fine as hell.”

“Mm, how fine?”

I sighed, “Fine enough to where I had to realize I’m taken.” I told her as her eyes widened before nodding.

“Next field trip to the stadium, I want parts. Some eye candy won’t hurt.”

I giggled, “Sean ain’t doing it for you no more huh?”

She found no humor in my statement, “Don’t come for my baby. Wit his scrawny ass.”

I laughed at her remarks before twirling a curl in my finger. Andrea took notice, “He say something to you about psycho b****?”

I scoffed, “Hell no. Chris is so dumb I swear.”

Andrea rolled her eyes. After she told me Ashley was claiming to be pregnant, I knew immediately it had something to do with the phone call that came to the house the other day. Talking about Chris was in some paternity suit. I told them to f*** off and that they had the wrong Chris Brown. Find the singer. The second Andrea said something about Ashley being pregnant, I knew it had something to do with her. And my mind instantly went to the night of the party.

The Alpha’s were throwing the football team a celebration party for winning the national title at their frat house. I walked in with Chris and our brothers trailing close behind. Everyone got hype as s*** the moment he walked in.

“Ayyyyeeeee! Breezy brought it home! Shoe in for the Heisman!” One of the alphas, Jeff, called out holding a bottle of Ciroc high in the air. Chris chuckled while raising his hand in gratitude as everyone at the party clapped before tending back to dancing, drinking and smoking.

Jeff walked up with shot glasses filled in his hands, “Gotta take a shot Breezy! We getting turnt tonight!” He roared as Chris shrugged, accepting both shots. He handed one to me, tapped my glasses and we swallowed the liquor without a second thought.

“Baby,” I called to Chris drunkenly after about a half hour of being at the party and 8 shots in. His eyes were low looking back at me.

“Sup beautiful?”

“I’m going to try to find the bathroom. I’ll be back okay?” I said to him, as he simply nodded in response watching me disappear into the thick crowd. I finally found the door to it, attempted to turn the nodded only to find it locked. I grew aggravated and began to bang loudly on the door,

“Plleeeaaaseeeee hurry up!! I have to pee!” I squealed, dancing on my tippy toes to resist the urge.

I heard some tussling on the other end before the door finally opened, revealing his face.

He was taken back at first, but soon recovered with a smile, leaning against the doorpost. “Well if it isn’t my little Quinnberly.”

I blushed before leaning into his awaiting arms, “Karter. So good to see you. How you been?” I asked running my eyes over his appearance. I ran my fingers through his hair, “Growing it out?”

He chuckled before rubbing his hand over his growing mane, “Yeah. Tae likes it long so I’m doing this for her.”

My eyes widened at the sound of her name, “Tae? The girl Chris was trynna talk to?”

He grinned before nodding, “Yeah. Funny story. We ran into each other a little while after ya’ll dumped us n’s***. Ended up hitting it off. That’s my baby man. Thank Chris for me. Somehow I always end up with his girls. Creepy as that is.” He joked as I joined him in laughter. I loved how this wasn’t awkward running into him.

“I’m happy for you. You enjoy someone as perfect as you are Karter.” I expressed. He smiled shyly before tapping my chin.

“So do you. I’m glad you followed ya heart Quinn. Don’t let the bulls*** ever effect ya’ll aight? Cuz trust me, there’s gonna be plenty of bulls***. Always ride for him. Got it?” He asked, boring his green eyes into mine.

I finally nodded after a few seconds had passed., “Got it.”

After I relieved myself, I made my way back towards the crowd of the party, scanning the room for Chris. I spotted his tall stature talking to Wiz and Amber and started heading in that direction, until I was shoulder swiped.

I turned to see this devil with blue eyes staring back at me. I instantly became annoyed, “Watch where you’re going next time Ashley.”

She smirked, “Or what?”

I groaned, “What you testing me for? You already saw what happened to your friend. I’ll have less mercy on you.”

She laughed, “That green eye does not look good on you boo.”

My brows furrowed, “Green eye? The f*** I need to be jealous for? I’m not worried about you.”

“Oh you will be. I’ve been quiet this long because I was hoping Chris would realize how dusty you were on his own. Since he hasn’t, I’ll be sure to make that perfectly clear. He thinks he’s in love with you Quinn, but he’s not! Your nigga still hits me up to this day, checkin for me.”

I smacked my lips, “You’re pathetic. Why can’t you get it through your big ass head that Chris is over your ass? He didn’t even love you. Didn’t fight for you. Didn’t do s***. Just disposed of you like the trash you are. You’re cute, but so what? So the f*** what Ashley? Let it go!”

Her expression didn’t change, she still held her smirk. “I’m not the one that can’t let go. It’s HIM. When this s*** hits the fan, and it will. You’ll see where his heart truly lies. With his family.”

I looked at her questionably, “The f*** are you talking about?”

She shrugged, “You’ll see sooner or later. Have a good night. Make sure you strap up.” She winked before walking away.

I was too drunk to care or even entertain that looney b****. Long as she stayed clear of me and mine, I was good.

“I know she’s up to something. And I highly doubt she’s pregnant.” I told Andrea, coming back from the memory of the party.

Andrea gave a worried glance, “What if she is though? And what if it’s Chris’ baby? Then what?”

I gave her a blank stare, “She’s not and it won’t be. She’s just trying to rattle him. Start this stupid scheme in getting him back. It’s all stupid. Chris, no matter how dumb he is, isn’t going anywhere. I’m not letting that happen.”

She sighed, “You gonna tell him you know?”

I shook my head, “Hell no. This is really showing me some things about him. I’ll call him out, but for now I need him to prove that he’s my best friend before anything. I know he’s worried about losing me over it, but little does he know that even if I didn’t know Ashley was crazy, I’d ride for him no matter what. He needs to learn to trust me with the truth over everything. That’s the only way we’re going to survive.”

Andrea took in my words, “That’s real s***. Let that be Sean though. Swear his d*** would be cut off.”

I laughed, shaking my head at her petty ass, before dialing the number to Quincy’s house. I had to check to see if he wanted to be there when my mother came home.

“I’ll check you later Dre.” I said to her, walking towards the stairs and hearing the line ring.

My Aunt finally answered the phone breathlessly, “Hello?”

“Hey Auntie. Quincy around?” I asked, hearing a bunch of movement in the background.

“Yeah baby. Sorry I’m trynna cook. Ya father is driving me nuts.” She complained as I laughed softly.

“Matt! Matt come get this phone!” She yelled out, using the nickname that stemmed from his middle name. His whole side of the family never really referred to him as Quincy so much.

“Roll ya ass on in here. I gotta get back to the stove!” She rushed, as I found humor in her scolding him. She never went easy on him just because he was in a wheelchair.

“I got it. Damn.” He groaned, as I heard his strong voice boom on the receiver. It still made me nervous to talk to him at times.

“Hello?” He greeted, unsure of who to expect.

“Hey Quincy, it’s me.” I told him, reaching my bedroom door.

“Oh, Hey baby. Nice to hear from you. You liking Dallas?” He questioned.

I nodded like he could see me. “Yes, I am. Still adjusting. And got some creepy neighbors but I’m good. I’m actually going to be home next week when Mom gets out. Chris and I both will. I wanted to extend an invitation to be at Nana’s to welcome her home..”

It was quiet on his end for a moment, “ think she’ll want to see me?”

I crossed my eyes, “You’re her husband Quincy. If she wanted you dead, you would have been. Feel me?” I never sugarcoated s*** with him. He knew what he did to our family, and the consequences of his actions.

A breath released on the other end, “Did she..did she talk about me at all? Or say anything? Should I bring a gift or something?”

I muzzled my laughter. It was cute that he was nervous as hell to see her after all this time had passed. He had no idea how to react.

“Do what’s in your heart. I just want her to feel loved, so if you don’t plan on bringing that, stay your ass at home.”

“I love her. She knows that. I was just sick, that’s all.” He defended softly, the shame present in his tone.

“It’s cool Quincy. We’re all just trying to move forward at this point. She can live as a free woman now. That’s the most important part.” I assured. I usually don’t try to make him feel better, but I definitely didn’t want him to feel bad. My mother wanted him there.

“Okay. And you gon get enough of calling me Quincy girl.”

I rolled my eyes, “You rather me call you Matthew?”

He scoffed before chuckling; “Now you know that’s not what Matt is short for. You don’t know my name now?” He feigned hurt but I was really stuck. This whole time I thought his middle name was Matthew.

“Wait, I thought-“ Before I could object, my other line beeped. It was Chris.

“Hey Quincy, that’s my other line. I’ll call you back later to give you more details on her release.” I told him.

“Okay baby girl. Thanks for calling.”

*clears throat.... I'll wait.

Aw s*** quinn dnt do dat s*** u jus gn start mo trouble run it

Despite him not telling her right then and there, does she really think the practice facility is the proper place to talk about his drama with Ashley? And if she knew first why didn't she say something to him about it? That makes her just as bad as him.

I strolled through the Galleria Mall killing time before I had to go take Chris lunch. I chose to hit the mall first before going to see him because I knew I wasn't going to feel like it afterwards. Plus everyone left me this morning. Sean took Andrea to go find a car and Wiz and Amber were looking for an OB-GYN. Neither one of those things appealed to me.

"Here spending all ya boyfriends money?" I heard a voice say behind me. I turned to see Matthias.

"You stalking me now?" I snapped. He was wrong about me spending Chris' money too.

He just chuckled as he fell into step with me. "Chill shawty. Just left a business lunch. You ain't the only one in Dallas allowed to go to the mall." His accent was so thick. He definitely was from New Orleans.

I was fixing to respond but our attention was caught by someone calling to Matthias.

"Aye Major! What's good boss?" A guy said walking up to greet him. Major?

"Aye what's good playboi. What you getting into taday?"

The guy smiled before rubbing his hands, "Just up here with my ol' lady. Guess same for you?" He said eying me as I turned my nose up.

Matthias laughed, "Nah. This just an old friend you can say."

The guy grinned, "Ha all love. I'll catch you later Major. Prive' right?!"

"No doubt man. I'll be dere." They dapped each other up one last time before the guy headed away.

"Major?" I questioned as Matthias smiled.

"That's what they know me as. Not everyone can get ya government shawty."

I raised a brow, "So why I get it?"

He eyed me from the side, "You not everyone."

"An old friend? You're acting like you've met me before."

He released a small snort, "And you acting like you haven't."

I was so confused. "Am I missing something? The first time I've ever seen you in my life is when I moved across the street from you."

He smirked, "Life funny ain't it? Fate has a way of pulling everything together. Unbeknownst to us."

I halted and looked at him, "No seriously. Who are you Matthias? If THAT is even your real name."

"It's not. It's my middle name. Don't care for my first name too much."

"What is it?"

He sighed, "Look Quinn. All dis may sound crazy bu-" the sound of my phone ringing interrupted him.

I was waiting for him to speak and he was waiting for me to answer it. I wanted to hear what he had to say first.

"Answer that." He ordered as I groaned and looked at my phone seeing it was Chris calling.

I looked at him sternly, "Just give me one second!" I scolded him before turning to answer my phone.

"Hey baby." I greeted hearing noise in Chris' background.

"Sup boo. Where you at? You on ya way?" He questioned. I hesitated and turned to look at Matthias only to see his punk ass had left.

"Yeah I am. I'll be there in 20."

"Baby this is Trey Neverson, Shad Moss and Kevin McCall. They all just got drafted with me." Chris introduced proudly as I waived at the guys.

"Nice to meet you!"

"Pleasure is ours beautiful," Trey said walking up and grabbing my hand ever so gently. I laughed at the expression Chris was giving him. Trey laughed too.

"I'm playin man I'm playin. You know I can't help it!" Trey defended as Chris just shook his head. I guess he was the player of their little group.

"Aye, why you even introduce her to 'Mr. Steal-Ya-Girl' bruh?" Shad asked shaking his head as I continued to smile. They all seemed like fast friends and it was good they were sticking together being new in the league.

They informed me that I came on a day when their girls weren't gonna be there but said I'll definitely meet them the first game. I wasn't worried nor did I care. I had the only female friends I needed back at the house.

We chatted a few minutes longer before Chris started giving me a tour of the famous stadium. I'm happy I lost that bet. I was enjoying myself with him in his element.

"Hey Chris," I started as we were taking a walk underneath the bleachers.

"Hmm?" He hummed, waiting for me to continue.

"Matthias look familiar to you?" I questioned as his forehead wrinkled.

"Matthias. Our neighbor?"

"Ooh! That nigga." He paused for a moment. "I mean.. Something about him seems similar. But I've never seen him before..why?"

I shrugged, "I don't know. I just get this vibe from him sometimes. But I can't put my finger on it. Then he says things like past tense when he's referring to me."

Chris stopped and looked at me close, "You've been spending time with that dude?"

I quickly shook my head, "Nah. I just run into him some times. I don't know. Forget I said anything." I sighed realizing that Chris wasn't the person to talk to about this. Matthias would have to be something I figured out on my own.

I changed the topic completely, "Hey, I bought our tickets for Ohio.."

He nodded. "We going the day ya mom gets out right?"

I bit my lip hesitantly, "Not exactly. I'm going a few days before you."

His eyes widened, "What?! Why?"

"I have some things to take care of alone before you get there."

His eyes filled with suspicion, "Like what Quinn? What could possibly be happening that you can't tell me about?" He asked as I took in a deep breath, preparing myself for the lie that was about to come out.

"Well Nana wants me to help her get the room ready and to go shopping for my mom. Boring stuff that you're not going to miss out on. I'll be there to pick you up from the airport and we're going to get her after that." I smiled sweetly at the end, watching his face soften in relief.

"Oh okay. Good. I hope you know you can tell me anything right?" He draped his long arm around my shoulder, pulling me into his side.

I rolled my eyes. Apparently he didn't think the same. It was cool though. Little did Chris know I was going to take care of his sudden situation myself. The situation he thought I knew nothing about. Hell I knew before his dumbass did.

Ashley was going to be getting a visit from me the second I landed in Ohio.

oh lawddddddd pls dont let this crazy b**** ruin things or else ill beat her ass myself lmao

Oh wow. Chris just be 100 with Quinn pleaae, like don't leave room for any doubt or error. Href has fought so hard and waited so long I just don't want THIS to happen. and ol dude from across the street, umm Yeah He gone play a part in some drama. I peep him! ughhhhhhhhh. you Got us on edge TNicole!!! Run it!
