"Let The Drummer Kick"

As Citizen Cope gracefully soothed her mind, she stood companionless in the middle of the empty community college gymnasium right in the middle of the faint halfway line of the basketball court, looking pleasant and light-hearted on the outside, but feeling nervous and disgruntled on the inside.

With the ball trapped just between the fat on her bicep and ribcage, she looked up at the horribly painted red and white walls and read the different banners and pennants from previous years and even before her time that hung there decorating the walls. There were plenty for her to go through.

A quick indrawn breath escaped her lips.

"I hate transferring.." she mumbled under her breath.

Because her music was so loud, she wasn't able to hear the sound of a whistle being blown from the coaches lips as he trudged in front of his team of varsity senior boys. As the screeching sound came to an end it was replaced by the squeak of twelve different pairs of sneakers pacing against the freshly waxed wood floors of the gymnasium.

In single file they ran behind one another. The vibration coming from the floors underneath her feet is what snapped at her attention. She turned to her left and in time she caught sight of the team running laps around her. She met eyes with their feet until she met with the last pair and brought her eyes up to the face of the owner.

<a href="http://thechrisbrownblog.com/site/wp-content/uploads/2012/10/chris-brown-celebrity-basketball-game-atlanta-2.jpg">Josiah</a> jogged at a good pace behind his team making sure no one fell behind and everyone stayed in line, but every few seconds his attention was pulled over to the girl standing in the middle of the court. His eyes didn't want to stay on her for long, but something wouldn't let him pull away. Her presence was like a gravitational pull. He couldn't see her face for a while until he came around the front end of the court to catch her staring at the ground by his feet, he wanted a better look though, so he kept his eyes locked on her face for as long as he could and as if she felt his burning stare, she finally looked up from his traveling shoes, to his eyes.

They were locked on one another.

She wasn't sure why she felt the need to stare, her mother had taught her better than that.

A tap on her shoulder had her snap out of her mind and around to face the person whom the finger belonged to. The coach stared down at her with questioning eyes, causing her to squint in confusion before she removed a bud from her ear.

"I said I'm sorry, this is a closed practice. No spectators miss..." Asked the well built <a href="http://images.starpulse.com/Photos/Previews/Duane-Martin-au01.jpg">man</a> in all Adidas wear.

"J-Jade..Vice." She stuttered, nerves getting the upper hand.

"Ahh, from the Wakelin Community College Hornets varsity team, right?" Asked the coach. <a href="http://images.fashionmodeldirectory.com/model/000000347860-josilyn_williams-fullsize.jpg">Jade</a> nodded shortly before letting her eyes dart over to the jogging team, coincidently landing on Josiah's once again.

"I heard through the grapevine that you'd be joining us soon. I'm Coach Mack. It's nice to meet you." Said the coach holding out his hand for her to shake.

She tore her eyes away once she saw that he was looking right back at her. She wondered if he were staring at her, or the conversation between her and his coach. Looking out in front of her she joined hands with Coach Mack and smiled small.

"Nice to meet you too, Coach." She replied softly.

"You trying out tomorrow afternoon? My girls varsity could really use a good point guard. Emphasis on the "good" part." He asked with a brow raised. Jade smirked dryly. She wasn't so sure she wanted to go through the whole process of joining a team again. She had been snatched right out of her comfort zone and dropped into a brand new life that she knew nothing about.

"I'm not sure I want to this time around..too much I gotta do right now with classes and catching up and what not..I don't know.." She answered with a simple shrug of her shoulders.

"Give it some thought, and if you decide it's what you want..then I'll see you here tomorrow at 2:30pm sharp." He rested a comforting hand on her shoulder, patting it gently. Jade offered him a smiled and nodded.

"Transition's always tough but, you're gonna like it here..and I'd love to have you on our team Miss. Vice." He encouraged. Jade, feeling very conflicted at the moment, only smirked at his words.

"Thanks Coach.." She spoke lowly, almost instantly falling into a depression over the matter. She'd have a new coach, a new team even. Building relationships with people was never her strong point.

Josiah had managed to perfect the art of not seeming like a creep in the time he'd been running laps with his team. His teammate for a year, <a href="http://userserve-ak.last.fm/serve/_/46298189/Trey+Songz+TS.jpg">Ryder</a>, spun around on his heels and began jogging backwards, grabbing Josiah's attention.

"Ey dawg, who's that talkin' with coach? I ain't never seen him so nice, even with girls." He asked eyeing the two bodies in the middle of the court as his face twisted up in confusion. Josiah only shook his head and looked back over to her, thinking that since Ryder was doing it, there was no way he'd look weird doing it as well. He couldn't see her face anymore, only her back and the outline of her small frame. She was tall, but not freakishly tall in his opinion. He judged by the ball tucked underneath her arm that she was a baller, which immediately caught his attention when he first laid eyes on her.

"I don't even know man. Look like she a baller though." He breathed trying to pace himself and speak to his friend, who shrugged and returned to his jog, spinning on his feet to face the front once again.

Jade locked eyes with him for what must had been the fourth time now. She couldn't deny that from where he was he looked absolutely gorgeous. His glistening caramel complexion and tattoos really did wonders for him. His toned legs and defined biceps really had her taking second looks. He had almost all of her attention.

"Give it some thought..you still gotta go though. It's still a closed practice." Smiled Coach Mack. Jade pulled her eyes off of the boy and focused on the man, delivering a light hearted chuckle and a nod.

"See you around Coach." She paid one last look at the team and then the last runner, catching his eyes yet again before she turned on the heels of her shoes and trailed out of the gym at a smooth pace.

From what she could gather the coach was a cool and down to earth man. He was young, and vibrant with every word he spoke. She liked that.

Josiah watched as she retreated out of the gym. Her long flowing dark hair sweeping her cheeks as she moved with a calm he hadn't seen anyone walk with in a while. He wondered what her story was, knowing by the way she looked at him, that she has one.

"Ey Coach can we stop man?!" Yelled a tired Ryder. The coach laughed and blew on his whistle, signaling for them to stop and meet in the middle of the court to do some stretching.

"Ey Coach who was that fine piece of tail you was talkin' to?" Asked another of Josiah's of teammates and friend, <a href="http://l1.yimg.com/bt/api/res/1.2/jDfD2O83t4HhrzhVwArlPw--/YXBwaWQ9eW5ld3M7cT04NTt3PTYzMA--/http://media.zenfs.com/en/blogs/ymusic-stop-the-presses/ca201ae9-1ea1-4729-9764-fa9e69f22991_tyga-gabriel-olsen-filmagic-8-18-12.jpg">Dev</a>. Coach Mack threw him a look.

"A piece of tail you will never get to Devon, so hush." He told him. The gym was then filled with laughter. Josiah had to laugh himself.

"I see you Coach.." Muttered Dev with a sour look.

"Nah but for real though Coach..who she be?" asked Josiah with curiosity written in the creases of his forehead. Coach Mack looked over at the captain of the senior varsity team and smirked.

"I'm surprised you don't already know." He said. The boys all looked at one another with confusion.

"Jade Vice. Former point guard for the Wakelin Community College Hornets. She transferred from there last week. She's well known back where she's from." He told them, watching as they switched stretches.

"Which is?" Asked Ryder.

"Brooklyn." He replied.

"Woo..damn! Shorty came a long way dawg. From Brooklyn to Atlanta?" Spoke Dev. Josiah's eyebrows raised in slight surprise. That was quite a random change in scenery. Shaking his head, he also shook her out of his thoughts knowing he had better things to worry about.

"Aight, aight enough with that talk. Let's go everybody to the base line! I want suicides let's go!" Said the coach as he blew his whistle and watched the boys jog to the base line, ready to work hard.

"We got our first game of the school year on Friday! Exactly one week! First game of the semester! And I want a win! So we gon' work! Let me see y'all put in work!" His yells echoed throughout the gym as he strolled along the half way line with his hands behind his back. The teams feet pounded against the wooden floors leaving skid marks at every line.

As Jade stood outside the gym she was immediately met with the fresh air of the day, the breeze was calm and sun was bright and high in the afternoon sky. The campus was flooded with students mingling and horse playing with each other in their groups. Jade stood there, alone and in her own world as she looked over everything in front of her. This was the view of her life now. Things were so different from her city life.

Digging into her pants pocket, she pulled out the folded paper with the directions to her dorm room and the blueprint to the college campus. She read over the title at the top of the page.

<em>Welcome to University of Atlanta!</em>

Groaning internally, she began to move in the direction which she hoped was right and would take her to her dormitory.

<em>"Let the drummer kick, let the drummer kick that.."</em>

run it!

"Finally." Said a voice that Jade made out to be Tyson's. she smirked keeping her eyes closed and exhaled softly.

"Thought you skipped town or something." Said a groggy Jade.

"And leave you in such a state? Never." Tyson responded with her trademark smile. Jade opened her eyes just in time to catch it.

The two caught each other in a soulful gaze. Jade fed off of Tyson's energy.

"How are you so wise and positive all the time?" Asked Jade in wonder.

"I've been through a lot. Learned through those experiences and they..turned me into my now." She shrugged casually. Jade prayed that she turned out like Tyson in the future, if not close to half of the person she is.

Tyson sat forward in her seat, clasping her hands together.

"..are you gonna be okay, Jade?" She asked. Jade knew it wasn't a question that Tyson didn't know the answer to, but more a quizzical question, one where Tyson knew the answer, but wanted to make sure that Jade knew the answer as well.

"..I will be." She answered confidently.

"This whole accident..this whole semester, it's changed me for the better. I know now, who I am, who I'm supposed to be." Smirked Jade.

Tyson delivered a genuine smile.

"Just in case you ever forget, let me be the first to remind you...You are strong. Resilient. Endurable. Capable..you are brand new, you no longer hold onto pain from your past. You are a brave soul, driven by deeper truths, you shine brighter than any being in a closed space...You are energy, you will never give up and most importantly, you are not a person who will depend on the love of a man to give her life. A man is only half of you, he is not your whole..never forget that YOU are your own hero...a shero. You own complete control, Vice..no one else." Finished Tyson. Jade was in tears by the end.

"Why does this feel like goodbye?" Asked Jade.

"Ohhh no. It's not a goodbye. It's a..until next time. I'm always here for you honey, but for now, I've gotta be with my family. I miss my husband to death." She chuckled. Jade nodded feverishly.

"...Thank you. You are..my angel, Tyson Brown." She smiled through her tears. Tyson gave a sweet smile and pecked her cheek twice before standing to her feet.

"You're leaving now?" Asked Jade sadly. Tyson smiled sadly.

"I've got a flight in two hours." She replied. Jade looked away from her.

Tyson thought long and hard before she reached up around her neck and unlatched the gold chain from around her neck and let it dangle from her hands. Jade watched her closely.

"Here." Said Tyson as she moved to latch the necklace around Jade's neck.

"How about you hold onto this for me?.." She said as she completed the process and stood straight again. She watched teary eyed as the necklace hung from Jade's neck.

"Tyson I can't take this from you--"

"You can and you will. Just hold onto it. I want you to...Kelly would want you to too." She cut in. Jade remembered the stories Tyson had told about Kelly; her best friend that had been murdered years ago. She wished she had been fortunate enough to meet him.

"He'll watch over you now that I won't be able to as much ." Tyson grinned earning a lopsided grin from Jade as she sniffed back the tears.

"Thank you..so much." She replied.

"I'm gonna miss you too, baby. Tell Josiah next time I'm in town, I'll touch up his tats for him, that little boy's been naggin' me all week but I didn't have the time." The older woman spoke holding the doorknob. Jade sniffed.

"Speedy recovery, kid. Don't cry, everything's gonna be fine." She winked opening the door wider.

"Make each other as happy as you can." Said Tyson, before she walked out of the door, leaving Jade for herself once again.

Jade played with the pendant on her chain; two golden birds on a branch.

She smiled feeling a warmth fall over her suddenly and gently stuffed the necklace underneath her gown as she sat in the silence of her own company.

Awwwwww, RUN IT!!

run it

Awww they are too cute. I'm glad he is being da bigger mane.
Run It!!!

I'm glad Jade is recovering and the talk she and Colby had was great. I'm glad they cleared the air. Now its time for Jade and Josiah to be together. He obviously truly loves her and i'm glad she found love in a hopeless place lol
Run it!!!

Man all that was intense! Jade was a goner almost. Im glad that her parents were so accepting of the idea of Josiah being around. He's really shown how much he really loves her throughout this whole thing. And it's good to see that things are getting back to normal with her and her friends now that everything had calmed down.

To me I feel like this accident had to happen in order for Jade and everyone else to accept the idea of them better? It's terrible that it was a tragic situation but it helped them come to terms without all of the drama. I was pissed when she kept blaming herself and thinking she deserved the accident. But now im just happy she's alive, and able to love freely and be loved.

Excited to see whats in store for these two. And excited to see Tyson come back. she lowkey dipped out of the story for a moment lol. Maybe bringing somebody from the old click perhaps?

Run it!!

awwwwwwwwww He love her!!! she loves him!! ahhhhh I'm ecstatic!! whoop! Run it!

<strong>One Week Later: Wednesday..</strong>

"Healing nicely Miss. Vice. You may even be able to leave this place sooner than you thought." Spoke the doctor as he jot down words on Jade's chart. She beamed with a lopsided grin; the best she could do.

"Yeah?" She asked.

"I don't see why not. Your scrapes are beginning to scab over and you've been eating and drinking all of your fluids. No reason why you can't continue to progress at home." Smiled the doctor.

"You sure you wan' let her out so quick, doc? She clumsy as hell-EY!" Yelled Josiah as Kendra lay a heavy hand behind his head, knocking his hat off. He screwed up his face and scowled over at Jade who had begun to chuckle lightly but winced once the pain sparked in her ribcage.

"Serve you right." He said with a pout as he rubbed the back of his head.

"Man Zi, leave her alone. Ya big head always got somethin' to say." Said Tina as she smacked her lips while she lay on the couch set up in Jade's room.

Josiah rolled his eyes and slouched in his chair next to Jade's bed. Kendra sat comfortably in the chair next to him.

"Shut up T." He mean mugged his friend. Tina stuck her tongue out in return.

"I'm sure she'll be fine under a watchful eye." Said the doctor.

"I'm sure my mother won't let me out of her sight, doc." Smiled Jade as she kept her eyes on the small television screen hanging from the wall.

"I'll be back to check on you later. Try not to drive her insane by then. Josiah?" Spoke the doctor earning a sore look from Josiah. He had been back and forth everyday from campus to the hospital just so that he could be with Jade, bringing homework for her and him as well.

"Ahhhh!" Teased Tina and Kendra with laughter. Jade chuckled.

"What I do?" He sulked.

"Have a good day everyone." Said the doctor as he left the room.

"Man. I don't know bout y'all, but I'm feeling the recovery floor WAY more than the ICU." Said Tina as she lounged around.

"I hate them both. I just wanna get out of here." Said Jade with a pout.

"Just a little while longer ma." Spoke Kendra.

"Thanks for being here guys. You should all be in class and at practice, but you're here with me all day instead. Means a lot." Jade smirked thankfully.

"Don't even trip girl. Your family. Besides, the faculty understands. We just wanna make sure you good and keep you company inside this hellhole." Smiled Tina. Jade's heart smiled.

"Heard from the guys?" Jade inquired.

"They all in class. They gon' holla later. Tyson hit me up, said she'd swing by later on. She gotta take care of some stuff at the gallery." Spoke Josiah. Jade nodded and relaxed into her pillow feeling tired all of a sudden.

"You tired?" Asked Josiah.

"Just a little." Replied Jade.

"You should get some rest. Time will pass quicker that way." Spoke Kendra.

"Will y'all still be around?" Asked Jade with a frown. She was enjoying her friends' company and wasn't ready to have them leave yet.

"Sorry babe, but we kinda got a bunch of homework to take care of, papers and whatnot before break starts up." Complained Tina.

"Unfortunately we ain't gon have time to come back here before break. We'll just see you after, just another week and a few days though. Speedy recovery. I promise we gonna work on that jump shot when you outta that cast aight?" Smiled Kendra as she bent down to peck Jade's cheek after Tina.

"Aight..love y'all. I'll call if I get outta here earlier than expected." Smiled Jade, though Josiah could note the sadness.

Then there were two.

"You gon' ditch me too?" She questioned Josiah with a tired smirk. He licked his lips before catching his lip between his teeth.

"I kinda..got homework to do too. I'd do it here, but I left it back on campus and I'm runnin' low on cash--"

"Don't worry about it. You've been here everyday since I got here. You need a break...go." She smiled. Josiah reached in an pecked her lips softly.

"When you get outta here, we gotta talk more about us. I mean I know we just chillin' for now with everything goin' on, but I think we need to discuss the future. Our future.." He said as he stood to his feet.

"Yeah, I agree. I've been meaning to, but with everything going on--"

"Yeah..it's cool. I still gotta talk to Colby. Make sure there ain't no beef between us. Coach gon be pissed if we come back from break and we still arguin' and s***. I gotta make sure we straight." Said Josiah.

"That's big of you." Said Jade.

"I'm a big man." Returned Josiah c**kily, earning an eye roll from Jade.

"Call me later." She said as he made his way to the door.

"Aight baby, love you." He said before leaving the room.

"Love you too." She returned grinning lopsided as she was left by herself.

She relaxed into her pillow and shut her eyes letting sleep take over her.

that was deep. glad He isn't trynna force the inevitable! Run it!!

I'm glad he wasn't on that psycho stuff anymore.

run it!

Awwwww RUN IT!!!

"We'll give you two some time to talk." Spoke Sharon, knowing that much had to be said between her daughter and Colby. She rested a hand on his shoulder.

"Glad you're okay sweetheart." She said to Colby, he smiled sadly in return. Guilt washed over him.

"Thank you Mrs. Vice." He returned softly. His eyes then travelled to Jade's father who delivered a tight lipped smile. Colby nodded and waited until they both left the room to bring his eyes back on Jade.

He chuckled lightly.

"I don't think he likes me very much." He said scratching behind his ear. Jade's lip twitched in effort of smirking.

"It's cause he knows you were my boyfriend.." She whispered shutting her eyes.

Colby winced at her use of past tense.

"Yeah..." He whispered looking away and down at her shattered hand. He shut his eyes tightly and brought his fist up to his mouth in anger.

"I did this.." He voiced. Jade opened her eyes then.

"I did this to you..I-God.." He teared. Jade remained silent.

"I screwed up-"

"Stop." She murmured, having heard enough.

"It's not your fault...none of this is..Im the one who cheated, I'm the one who couldn't be straight up with everyone. Me. Not you. This is my consequence Colby...and I'm sorry that you have to deal with it too." She interrupted. Colby shook his head in frustration.

"Why do you always feel as though you need to punish yourself for something? Why can't you just accept that I had a part in this? I crashed the car! I had that control and I lost it! I'm the reason your hand is broken--"

"Colby stop." Jade teared. Her voice cracked as she grew tired emotionally.

"You didn't break me..I need you to know that. Okay?...I broke you. I broke your heart and for that I am sorry...Im so sorry." Jade cried softly and ignored the pain. Colby's eyes watered as he played with his lips and avoided her eyes.

"I never thought you'd be the one to hurt me Jay. I mean I care about you a lot.." A tear slipped from his eye.

"I care about you too, and that's why I want to apologize to you for that.......but I cant apologize for falling in love with Josiah. I won't. The only reason why everything got this far is because I couldn't admit that before..but I'm done neglecting my feelings. It's time for me to be true...to everyone." Said Jade as she released her inner most thoughts.

"Guess I've always known that you two had something..I just believed that I had a better chance, but I was wrong...The day in the parking lot? When we had our argument?...That's when I think I really figured it out." Said Colby. Jades eyes went puzzled.

"Figured out what?" She asked.

"That you were in love with him too...you could have stayed there with me, we could've worked things out..but your heart wanted to go with Josiah, so it did." He admit. Jade never would have though that Colby was analyzing both her and Josiah that way.

"I was mad...but I'm not anymore. I mean I'm hurt, but I'll get over it...strong like can't chump strong love right? You and Josiah belong together." He smiled teary eyed earning a hint of a smirk from Jade.

"I'm sorry." She sobbed. Colby winced as he reached up to wipe away her tears. He was careful not to touch any cuts or scrapes.

"..I forgive you, Jay." He whispered looking into her eyes. Jade lost herself in his teal windows for the last time.

"I'm sorry, for the crash..and for not being what you wanted at the end of the day." He smirked sadly. Jade sniffed.

"I forgive you.." She said sincerely.

"Just..promise me that you'll be honest with yourself from now on? Stop punishing yourself..and be as happy as you can be everyday no matter what?" He whispered.

"..I promise." She replied. Colby sniffed and reached up while bracing his ribs with his arm and placing a gentle peck on Jade's lips before he sat back down in his chair and rolled his wheels backwards and away from the bed.

"Better get going, doctor said I might get released today." He smirked. Jade nodded.

"I'm happy that you're okay." She said.

"I'm happy that you're okay too." He paused to look her over.

"Tip? If you wanna get outta here? The key is to eat and drink everything they give you." He winked. Jade cracked the tiniest of smiles.

"I'll keep that in mind..thanks Cole." She replied.

"See you around." He said before he disappeared out of the room.

Once out of Jade's sight he let the tears roll down his cheeks as Toby met him halfway down the hall to assist him with getting back to his room.

"You did the right thing buddy. You'll be okay.." Said Toby encouragingly as he pushed his brother down the hall.

Aww I'm glad she's ok. That moment with her dad and Josiah was really sweet. I'm glad she's alive and her family is there for her. Colby does need to talk to Jade tho. That has to come.

run it

sorry but I don't like Colby. He was cool in the beginning but like now he's annoying after to me. the whole racist thing threw me off bc ion play that bs. then He trynna come at my boy Josiah, like hell Nah He ain't want it with the hands. then his ass can't control the damn car! got j dawg all injured, his ass pretty much just fine! ughhhhhhhhh Lol I'm sorry I had been holding that in. Run it!

"You are never allowed to scare us like that again! You hear me?" Said Sharon, Jade's mother. Jade lightly exhaled unable to laugh yet. Her mother gave a sad smile as she noticed.

"Sorry ma." Murmured Jade.

"How are you feeling today sweetheart?" Asked Jade's father as he stepped calmly back into the room. She noticed the lack of Josiah and frowned somewhat sad to have him out of sight.

"He'll be back. He needed rest." Smirked Richard causing Jade to look over at him.

"I like him." He spoke as he made his way over to the bed to place a gentle kiss on her forehead. Jade didn't know what to say or how her father had put two and two together, so she stared right back at him.

"..it's in the eyes. The way you two look at each other is a big enough giveaway." He winked. Jade blushed. Jade's mother delivered looks between her husband and child as realization hit her.

"Oh-that? That was Josiah? And you...you two?..." Jade moved her gaze onto her hospital gowned chest.

"I knew it!" Sharon squealed in happiness. Jade jumped in fright and hissed as the pain sparked all through her body.

"Honey!" Scolded Richard as Sharon placed her hand over her mouth.

"Oh! Honey I'm so sorry!." She apologized. Jade paid her parents no mind and focused solely on making the pain disappear. She desperately tried to adjust her body into a comfortable position, but failed miserably.

"I need..to get...comfortable." She winced trying to push herself up using the strength in her uninjured arm.

"Honey don't strain yourself." Said Richard.

"I--"

Suddenly the head of her bed had slowly started to move up, bringing her into a slightly more comfortable position. She was finally able to see her feet and frowned when she noticed that one was wrapped in a bandage. She froze her movement, being caught off guard and moved her eyes from her bed to the person next to it, beside her mother. There, was a battered Colby in a wheelchair. The scratches and bruises all over his face seemed to be healing already. He was in much better condition than Jade in her opinion. She was happy to see that.

"I uh..struggled with myself until a nurse finally came in and told me my bed had controls.." Smiled Colby nervously.
