"Momma?!" I yelled as I walked into her house through the backdoor. "I'll be down in a second, baby!" she called back in her west-coast accent. "Who dat?! Y/N!?" I heard my big sister Liyah, call out. She was three years older then me. "Yeah, girl," I answered as I walked down to my mother's finished basement. She smiled and hugged me when I got down there. She was watching TV. "What's good?" I asked. "Nothin'," she replied. "I just stopped by for a quick visit. Gotta be at work soon." I sat down on the couch next to her. "It's nice and cool down here. It's hot as a mothaf*ka outside." "I know, right? I can't wait until this heat wave is over!"
"You and me both, girl." "So tell me," Liyah said as she poked me on my side with her elbow, "who is this new guy I saw you wit' the otha day?" I smiled. "His name is Desire." "Fits him 'cuz that man was fine." "Word, but he could not work it in the bedroom." "Seriously?" I nodded. "Good sex is so hard to find," I said with a laugh and Liyah laughed with me, then she looked at her watch. "Oh sh*t, I gotta go." We hugged again. "But I will see you later." "OK, bye."
She walked up the stairs and I pulled out one of the family albums. I flipped it open as I sat back. I smiled. There were pictures of me and chris in the bathtub. We'd bath together until we were about four or five. Our mothers thought it was time to stop when we learned to differentiate between male and female. I laughed to myself thinkin' about it. I turned the page and smiled again. It was a picture of Chris and me on my fiftennth birthday. I sat back and reflected for a moment. That was also the night of my first real date. It was with Sean Sanders. He was eighteen and one of the finest dudes on our varisty football team. I'd had a crush on him for a while and was so excited when he told me he wanted to take me out for my birthday. I was also so nervous that I'd switched my outfit for the fifth time when I heard a knock on my bedroom door.
"Come in," I called throught the door. Chris stepped in with a smile. He looked me over. I had combed out my wrap and bumped the edges. I had on a knee lenght jean skirt and a blue long-sleeved top with high heeled Mary-Janes that I was workin' even in all my thickness. "You look pretty," he told me. I smiled as I put on some hoop earrings. "Thank you." He leaned against the doorframe. "Where y'all goin' tonight?" he asked. I grinned. "Not sure. He said he wanted to surprise me." "You really like this dude, huh?" "Am I that obvious?" He chuckled. "Kinda." His expression changed to a serious one.
"Just make sure this dude keeps his hands to himself." I giggled. "Aww, didn't know you cared so much," I teased. He smiled. "Just make sure. 'Cuz if he tries anything, he's gonna get dealt with." I smiled again. "And promise me you won't fall for any corny lines or games." I giggled again. "You really ain't givin' me any credit." His expression turned serious again. "I'm serious, Chunky," he said. I will never forget the concern and sincerity I saw in his brown eyes that night. I nodded. "OK, Chris, I promise. Cross MY heart," I told him with a smile as I made the gesture across my chest.
