Dusk Before Dawn.

I sat quietly in the living room, on the floor, listening to the walls sway in our strangled apartment complex. I looked at the clock near the couch. Almost four. I should finish dinner. I stood up, and headed toward the kitchen, catching a glimpse of myself in the reflection of a photograph hanging on the wall. I stopped and stared for a moment, putting my finger to my lip. My eyes swelled, but I made the tears retreat back to their hiding places. There was no room for them here. I went into the kitchen and discovered another leak beneath the sink. I scurried to find another empty pot to catch the water. I’d tell him. But I couldn’t. He’d blame it on me. I closed the cabinet and went into the refrigerator, retrieving the steaks I’d let marinate throughout the day, while I cleaned the apartment ruthlessly. Not a speck on the carpet. I moved quickly, placing the steaks in to broil and heating up the mashed potatoes. I went to the table and put our plates down. I shined the forks and knives with my t-shirt and placed them parallel to the plates. I looked at the clock. 4:24. My heartbeat quickened. I took another look at the living room before I scurried down the hall to the bedroom to make sure that everything was in its place.

I went back into the living room, just as I heard the door click and saw the knob turn. He entered the house and his eyes fell upon mine. My breath scurried away and I smiled a little, hoping he was in a good mood. He shut the door behind him, ignoring me, and began to take off his shoes. I should say something. Ask him how his day is. Do it!

“H-how was your day, babe?” I asked.

“Dinner ready?” He responded, loosening his tie.

“The steaks are in the oven right now. Mashed potatoes and broccoli is done.” I said quickly.

He stared at me for a moment before he walked past me. I exhaled and stood there, before I felt a blow to my lower back. I fell to my knees – asking God, “Why?” the entire way down.

Express I loved this story. Let me say this. You are WAY too talented to let anyone stop you from writing. You truly have a gift that many others wish they had. Please don't give up. I understand you may want to leave this board, but don't stop writing. Elite Creativity is honestly a wonderful site. I know for a fact that if you wrote on that board, you would have SO many supporters. You would be incredibly successful on that board I promise you. They recognize real talent on that board. I really think you should consider that. I'm sorry people were rude on this board and it really does suck that the rest of your faithful readers have to suffer because of that. I put Bubba in the backseat, before I shut the door and looked at Tru. I rubbed my hands on my thighs.

“Well I’ll…see you around, then. Thanks again for inviting us to dinner.” I said.

Tru’s eyes fell into mine and he closed the space between us. We were only a breath away. I could feel his heart beating up against mine. He rested his hand on the car behind me. I wet my lips.

“Tru?” I asked.

“…I, remember late nights over coffee and…freckles,” He said, running his finger along my cheek.

I shut my eyes, and opened them once more. “I know that…somewhere in time, we got lost, and ended up in different time zones. But I think I’m home now.”

I smiled and grabbed his hands, “Welcome home, my love.”

Y'all actually get really rude in my absence, lol. But I'll let it slide, and just end my days of writing on this board.

I sat at the dinner table, across from Tru. His eyes bounced around my face, and watched closely as I interacted with Bubba. Grandmama came into the dining room with a photo album in her hands and smiled at Tru.

“Thought you might enjoy these.” She said, before she handed him the book.

I took a bite of my mashed potatoes and allowed my eyes to bounce between my plate and Tru as he opened the book and began flipping through the photos.

“Graduation.” He said, smirking. “You looked good, Grandmama.” He said.

“Didn’t I?” she asked.

I looked over at Bubba who was trying to grab her iced tea. I helped her and watched as she drank, just as Tru got to a photo of he and I, outside of the State Theater, the night of his graduation. His eyes scanned the image a million times before he looked up at me.

All of a sudden, he was there. The sun was headed down behind the large skyscrapers downtown, and Grandmama stood in front of him fixing his tie.

“Sharp!” She exclaimed.

He looked down at his watch, expecting someone. After photos, he turned slightly to see her standing there. Butterflies took flight from the bottom of his feet, up to his chest, causing it to swell with anxiety. He smiled and walked toward her, grabbing her hands. They locked eyes and he remembered the sound of hearts in synchrony… and the smell of her perfume… and her hair… and how he felt, looking at her then.

“Hi,” he said aloud, at the table, now.

I looked up from Bubba at him and met his gaze, “Hi,” I responded.

A small smile hit his lips and he picked up his fork to eat, finally.

This is the third or fourth story Ive read written by her and Ive come to see that leaving a story un-done is a pattern of hers
