We walked downstairs and sat at the island. I stared at my mother who was giving Chris “the look”. I snapped in front of her to break the stare. My mother plainly handed Chris and I a bowl, the box of cereal and the carton half full of milk.

“Thank you.” I said plainly.

“Mmhmm.”

“Where’s Leyla?” Chris asked.

“She’s still asleep.”

“Oh.” he said filling up his bowl of cereal.

He handed me the box of cereal and I filled mine up. When I lifted up the carton of milk, it was empty. I looked over at Chris and his bowl was filled to the top. He smirked at me and I slapped him up upside his head.

“Y/N, I got some mail for you,” her mother said to her handing her an envelope.

“What is it?” she asked tearing it open.

“It’s a college convention.”

“Oooh! I got one of those in the mail too! Maybe we can all go!” Chris said barging in.

“Yea…that’s cool! But-------hold! It’s today!”

“Yea, so you better get dressed!”

“What if I had plans!”

“You don’t! So go get dressed!” she yelled.

“Ok….damn!” she said running upstairs to wash and get dressed.

The next morning….

“IIIIIIIIM HOOOOOOOME!” I heard someone yell.

“Okay mom………MOM!” I jumped up.

I shook Chris uncontrollably till he woke up.

“Huh….mmm…what?” He said getting up.

“My mother’s home” I whispered.

“Serious?”

“Yeah! You need to go!” I said getting up.

I yanked him up and ran into the room and changed into my pajamas and grabbed Chris’ clothes.

“Get dressed quick!”

I threw the clothes at him and looked at the clock. 8:14. She was extra early. I laid down in the bed lazily trying to play it off. Then I heard someone coming up the stairs. Chris came out of the bathroom.

“Duck!” I said and he did so as the door opened.

“Wow, you’re up?” my mother said inspecting the room.

“Uh….yea……doesn’t it look like I’m up?” I said hastily.

She stood there for a moment. It was silent.

“Can I help you?” I said breaking the silence.

“Why does it smell like this?” she asked.

“Smell like what?” my heart pounded.

“So stuffy? What were you doing yesterday?”

“Um………..uh…………are you cooking breakfast? I’m hungry!”

“…………………………….......................................yea. Come downstairs. I’ll fix you a bowl of cereal.”

“Wow mah.”

“Hey. You old enough to fix yourself ya own breakfast. Now hurry before the milk gets warm. And you can get up now Chris.” she said closing the door.

Chris got up slowly.

“How ya moms know?” he asked a bit nervous.

“I don’t know. I hope Leyla didn’t have anything to do with this!”

“Well now ya mother knows I’m here, lets go for another swing!”

“Lemme think……………………..NO! Now hurry before the milk gets warm. She’s done that before and boy, was that the worst breakfast ever!” I said getting out of the bed.

“Whatever. I’m still gonna get me some! That’s a promise!” he said gripping my butt.

“You betta get ya hands off of my backside or you wont have any fingers left. And that’s a promise!”
