The Art of Innocence

Hey everyone! I'm so glad we can post again, so i've decided to post one I've been working on for about three weeks now. And just as an FYI, Chris IS in the story, he's actually a big part, but he doesn't come in til much later. I can't tell you why or i'll give away the story. BUt anywho, read review and let me know if you want me to continue!

Preface
When little girls are born, it’s the most adorable thing. The adults around them watch them and wait for the moment when they’ll crack that first heartwarming smile, giggle that laugh that turns even the hardest of men to putty in their miniature hands. When they begin to walk and develop a sense of independence, they are even more carefully looked out for than when they were born, because we no longer cradle them in our arms and at a moment’s notice can recognize harm and keep them from it. We have to watch from a distance, and often times allow them to make their own mistakes, bandaging up the scraped knees when they come to us with tears in their big expressive eyes. When they begin to walk and have likes and dislikes and personality begins to take shape, it is then that we begin to give them the rules. For example, the rule that says little girls are to be seen and not heard. Or how about the one that says little girls play with dolls and not outside because the hair ribbons and pigtails that mommy worked so hard on will be ruined and they’ll no longer look like a little girl should look. Even better is the one that tells little girls that you can always look to daddy for help and he’ll always be there to save the day. When little girls become young ladies, more rules are added to the list, like: ladies don’t slouch, or ladies aren’t supposed to be very loud. Most of us are taught that we have to allow boys-in their own ways-to show us that they are interested in us. Then, all of a sudden we are no longer young ladies, and all the protection we had is stripped away. We are told that we are no longer children and that we should be mature and responsible. We should be well-read. We should always act as ladies in public, otherwise people will judge us and we will be treated as nothing more than the girls who have made a career of satisfying our dads and husbands who become bored in their home life and want some excitement before returning home to the mundane routine of waking up, going to work and coming home. And above all else we should believe in God and pray regularly to him that he will send us a loving and sensitive man who will take care of us, protect us, and help raise our children. It’s a bit much if you ask me. I mean, who came up with these rules anyway? And what do we do in a case that wasn’t covered by instructions?

Chapter Five: I Now Pronounce You Man and Wife….

“Do you, Shawn Clark, take this woman, Sabrina Williams to be your lawfully wedded wife?”

“I do.” Shawn beamed

Sabrina was too overwhelmed to speak. Tears threatened to spill down her made up face, as the minister asked if she would take Shawn as her lawfully wedded husband.

“I do.” She whispered through her tears. Shawn reached forward and wiped the tears that fell. Jasmine however, was having mixed feelings about the situation. Right behind her mom, next to the minister’s desk, she stood completely still and silent, her face betraying none of the emotions she was feeling. On the one hand, she loved Mr. Shawn, and knew that he made her mommy happy. On the other, she was perfectly fine with it being just her and her mom thank you very much. So instead, she pretended to smile while she had an internal struggle with herself. When Shawn reached forward and kissed her mom on the lips, unlike most girls her age, Jasmine smiled because she knew her mom was happy, and there wasn’t anything gross about that. As if she had thought her up, just then, her mom turned around and everyone was looking at her expectantly. Apparently someone had called her name and Jasmine tried to replay the last few minutes in her head and realized that the minister wanted to pray over them as a family. Jasmine pretended to trip to cause a distraction, and then she walked forward and stood in between the two of them, although closer to her mom than Shawn. She felt bad about being so mean to him, but she couldn’t help it. She didn’t want to share her mom, not with anyone.

The minister prayed for their family to prosper, and sooner than she liked, Jasmine was in the backseat of Shawn’s car, and she could see he and her mom holding hands. The moonlight glinted off her mom’s ring, and Jasmine allowed her face to fall and show how she was really feeling. She laid her head on the seat, and let the buzz of her mom and Shawn’s conversation lull her to sleep.

All too soon, her mom was tapping her awake, telling her they had arrived at her godmother’s house. She opened her eyes slowly, and laid her head on Shawn’s neck, allowing him to carry her into the house. She balled up into a knot as soon as he laid her across the bed her god mom had bought just for her. She closed her eyes and pretended to sleep as she felt her mom and Shawn kiss her forehead as they left.

“Thanks so much for keeping Jas for the weekend for us Ms. Debbie.”

“Oh it’s no problem Brina! I’m so happy for you two, and Shawn you are too sweet. I wish you guys the best of luck.”

Shawn smiled and pulled Sabrina closer to his side. He kissed her cheek and smiled at Ms. Debbie. “I promise to take care of them Mama Deb.”

“That’s what I like to hear darling. Now you two go on, and enjoy your weekend!” She shooed them out the door, and headed off to the Intercontinental Hotel to enjoy their honeymoon.

Chapter Four: We gotta get outta here….

Jasmine was jumping up and down, and getting nowhere. The room was completely dark, minus a bright light shining directly on her mom. Sabrina was holding a book and Jasmine’s Simba doll, but she was standing just out of Jasmine’s reach. Sabrina was smiling, and her lips were moving, but Jasmine couldn’t hear a word she was saying. Jasmine gave a rough lunge, and then she began to fall. She was falling fast with nothing to grab onto but there was nothing….

Suddenly her eyes snapped open and she sat up, her chest heaving. She was a bit disoriented, and looked around, trying to figure out where she was. She stretched and her arms hit the wall of the cave, and it was then that she remembered she where she was and why she was there. She could hear raised voices coming from the front of the library, but couldn’t make out who they were. She stood and jumped from the cavity in the wall and stretched her arms over her head as she walked forward and crept around the bookshelves. Suddenly, she heard her name being called from behind her.

“Jasmine?”

She turned around and jumped. Shawn was standing there one minute, the next he had swept her up in his arms and was hugging her tightly.

“Jas baby girl, why did you do that?? We were all so worried about you!”

Jasmine looked at Shawn, disappointed about being discovered.

“I wanted to read some more.” She lied quietly.

“Oh princess you can’t do that! Listen; next time, just tell one of us okay? We won’t ever stop buying you books to read, but you can’t just leave baby girl you could have been hurt! Come on, your mom is worried sick.”

He kept her in his arms as they walked towards the front of the library, as if he was afraid if he put her down she would run away again. They walked up on the tail end of Sabrina’s conversation with the librarian.

“You don’t understand, MY CHILD IS MISSING!”

“Sabrina!” Shawn called before they reached her.

She turned around and her heart almost stopped at the sight of her six year old. She ran over to Shawn and pulled her from Shawn’s arms kissing her on the cheeks and forehead. She held on to her for dear life.

“Oh my goodness Jasmine how did you get here??” She asked teary-eyed. “I walked.” Jasmine mumbled, not looking at her mom. Sabrina could tell there was something more there, but for the moment she decided to leave it be. She placed Jasmine on her feet, but Shawn picked her up again.

“Come on. You’re going to spend the day with me okay pudding?”

“Okay mommy.”

The three of them walked out of the Library without a second thought to the librarian.

For the rest of the day everyone doted on Jasmine, relieved that she hadn’t been kidnapped or something even more sinister. Later on that evening, Jasmine knocked on her grandfather’s door.

“Come in” He yelled.

Jasmine walked in slowly and saw him seated on the side of the bed facing away from the door and climbed up sitting next to him. He had a cigarette in his hand but at the sight of his granddaughter, he decided against lighting it up. Jasmine stared at the white stick and back at her grandfather.

“Granddaddy can you please stop smoking? It’s red ribbon week at school and my teacher said that smoking is bad and you could die. I don’t want you to die granddaddy.” Jasmine said staring up at him, her small almond shaped eyes piercing his grey/blue ones. He stared back and shook his head. “I’m trying baby.” Jasmine smiled. Herman was internally grateful that that answer seemed to be enough for her. Jasmine snuggled up to her grandfather as he put his arm around her.

“What’s the matter princess?”

“Granddaddy….is it my fault that mommy can’t graduate?”

He froze all the pieces suddenly falling into place. He knew his grandchild like he had created her himself. Jasmine had run thinking it was her fault her mom couldn’t graduate, and that if she was gone her mom could graduate. He hugged her even tighter, and held her chin making her look at him.

“Baby girl, none of this is your fault okay? All you have to do is keep making good grades and being a sweet child and everything will be fine okay? Don’t you ever blame yourself for this mess okay?”

Jasmine nodded, still unsure of whether or not his words were true.

Meanwhile, Sabrina closed the door, her heart breaking in two. It was then and there that she decided she needed to get her own place. Just her and Jasmine. She walked away from the door a new determination in her eyes. Later when people hears their story, some would argue that they should have just stayed with her mother and father…..and others would say that the events that followed that little conversation made Jasmine and her mother the strong women they eventually became.

Awwwwwwww so sad

Chapter Three (Cont’)

Sabrina stood and shook her head. Shawn moved to stand next to her as her father and Robbin looked up at her.

“I can’t deal with this right now. I’m gonna go and check on Jasmine.”

“I’ll come with you.” Shawn said looking around the room, stuffing his hands in his pockets. He and Sabrina walked down the short narrow hallway Sabrina calling Jasmine’s name as they went.

“Jas...Jasmine?” She poked her head in the room. She looked around and noticed Jasmine wasn’t there. She went in the bathroom and the other two bedrooms frantically. Still no Jasmine. Shawn called out to Sabrina worriedly.

“Babe! Her book bag….it’s gone. And so is Simba!” He said referring to Jasmine’s beloved Simba doll. Sabrina could feel her heart drop into her shoes. A chill washed over her body as she rushed into the living room where her dad and Robbin were still sitting and talking.

“Daddy! She’s gone!” She said frantically. “Come on we have to go!!”

“Wait wait, hold on! What are you talking about Brina?”

“Daddy we don’t have time for this my child is missing! She’s not here! Her book bag and her Simba doll are gone!” She practically yelled at the three of them as she rushed out he front door grabbing her car keys as she went. Shawn and Robbin jumped in the car with her, and her dad started up his car. They pulled out the driveway with sharp turns, not even bothering to tell her mom that they were leaving, or what had happened.

They ran across the city, thinking she couldn’t have gone far. They searched the toy store, the local library, and even the grocery store. Jasmine however, was nowhere to be found. SAbrina was beginning to get despearate, and Shawn suggested they pull over and collect themselves.

Driving recklessly down the street, Sabrina suddenly stopped right in front of Jasmine’s school as they passed it. She looked up at it, and burst into tears. She was crying hysterically and shaking as Shawn tried to console her. The parking lot was deserted; So Shawn took the wheel and parked the car in the empty dimly lit lot. Her father stayed in the car next to them, unsure of what to do. He was battling an internal struggle of his own. It was because of him his daughter didn’t get an abortion. Jasmine meant the world to him and he was trying to convince himself that she was alright. Sabrina continued to let the tears flow from her face. Shawn held her tightly in his arms and whispered in her ear.

“Baby…please….please stop crying. I promise she’s okay….Jasmine is a smart girl. She’ll be fine I promise…shhh…..it’s okay…calm down baby….”

“Shawn what are we gonna do….”

“We’ll find her. Come on, let’s go to the police station and file a report. We’ll find her I promise.” Sabrina nodded and got out of the car so that Shawn could take the wheel. When Sabrina got in the car, Robbin rubbed her shoulders soothingly.

“it’s okay Brina. Jasmine is fine. Don’t worry about it. You’re a wonderful mother and this isn’t your fault. By this time tomorrow we’ll all be laughing about this okay sis?”

Sabrina nodded slightly and stared blankly at the window of the library while Shawn told her dad the plan. After a while he got back in and fastened his seatbelt. He drove off followed closely by her dad. He held Sabrina’s hand with his right hand and drove with his left.

***************************************

Meanwhile, in the school library, Jasmine’s eyes snapped open. Her eyes darted around the dark library. The only light flowed through the window from outside. She took a deep breath realizing where she was and why she was there. She held her Simba doll to her chest and sighed. She wished she could go home, but she wanted her mom to graduate and be happy, and if this was what she had to do to get it done she would do just that. She leaned back on the puffy pillows in the cave and closed her eyes dozing off again.
