I pulled up in front of the large building, adorned with dark LED lights. The parking lot was being swept by a young boy in Jordan's. He couldn't have been much older than me. I tightened the strap on my purse and walked towards the door apprehensively. It had come down to this. I didn't have another option. I knocked softly on the door at first... only for it not to be answered. The boy that was sweeping approached and hit the door loudly with his hand flat. I jumped, startled and looked at him. He tossed me a smirk and went back to sweeping. The door opened and he stood there, looking me up and down.

"...Who referred you?" He asked.

I put my hair behind my ear and parted my lips to say something but nothing came out. I shrugged. He studied me once more and looked me dead in the eye.

"Name?" He asked.

"Veronica... I go by Ronnie." I said softly.

He opened the door wider for me to come in, so I did. I hadn't ever been to one of these places, I'd only heard about them... saw them in movies. I looked around wondrously, and heard the giggles of females arriving and leaving, all of them carrying gym bags. I studied their curves and looked down at myself.

"What you here for..." He asked, dismissively. His eyes didn't dance in my direction, as he strolled casually beside me, checking out everything on the floor - making sure nothing was out of place.

He stopped suddenly and I did too.

"...I need a job," I said, searching his face.

He snickered. "So go to the mall and fill out applications, sweetheart. This isn't something for your resume,"

"I understand that," I said, shaking my head. "I wouldn't be here if I didn't need to be. I need a job," I said, pleading with my eyes.

He scratched his face, as he ruminated. He pointed to the bar. "You start there," He said, before he began to walk.

"I was hoping to dance!" I called after him.

He shook his head, "We'll see,"

I exhaled, and dropped my bag on the floor before the DJ put on some music. I looked around and sat down on one of the bar stools. Well... at least I had a job.

Aubrey is hella confusing smh

RUNT IT!!!

Clyde's daughter had become great friends with Cayden. They were in class together. They came out of the building together one day, their mouths blue from popsicles. Clyde and I stood side by side, waiting on the two of them. Cayden came down the steps, her ponytail a mess. I picked her up and kissed her cheek.

"Hi beautiful." I stated.

"Hey mommy," She said, smiling at me, and looking at Clyde's daughter. "That's my best friend Breon."

Breon waved at me and smiled. I marveled at the length of her hair and touched her ponytail delicately.

"Her hair is beautiful!" I said.

"I can only do a ponytail." Clyde said.

"I could do something with it," I said, nodding. "If that's okay." I said, looking at him.

He shrugged, "I don't mind." He responded, before he looked at me.

I looked at Cayden and she and Breon were giggling about something. "C'mon let's go start this homework. I know you have a lot."

She nodded, "Everyday but Friday," She said. "Bye Bre!" She shrieked.

"Bye Cay!" Breon said.

I waved goodbye to Clyde and he did the same before he carried Breon to his car. I put Cayden in the car and got in, buckling my seatbelt.

"Breon's daddy likes you." Cayden said.

"Cayden, hush." I responded.

"I told her you didn't have a boyfriend and she said he doesn't have a girlfriend, so we could be sisters!" Cayden said.

"Mommy doesn't want a boyfriend right now." I said. "You need to focus on your grades and not on me. You don't sit by Breon in class, do you?"

She shook her head, "No. We only get to talk in dance, at snack, at lunch and in art class."

"Only." I said, laughing a little. "I'm glad you made a friend, baby."

She smiled and I looked back to see her eating chocolate. "Where did you get that?" I asked, snatching it from her.

"I was good in class today!" She shrieked. "Can I have it?"

"You had a popsicle and chocolate? No. You can have the chocolate after dinner." I said.

She furrowed her brow and looked like she wanted to pout but she pulled out a book from her bag instead.

"I have to write a paragraph today." She said.

"We've already been working on them. You'll do fine." I said.

I'd made enough money to do some better things for Cayden. I enrolled her in an all girls' school about 20 minutes away from our apartment. She was taking ballet there, they had an olympic sized pool and her classes were no bigger than 8 students. She would get a better education there. I waited on the steps for her to get out of school one day when the door opened, revealing Clyde's face. I smacked my lips. He walked down the steps and smiled.

"Did you go here?" He asked.

"No, my daughter does." I responded, looking straight ahead.

"You have a daughter? How old?" He asked.

"7." I responded.

"Wow." He responded.

I looked at him now, my eyes covered in annoyance. "Wow what?" I asked.

"Just wow." He stated, before he chuckled. "You don't seem like the kid type... but then I guess you kinda do."

"Get outta my face." I stated.

"Perhaps we should start over," He said. "I feel like we've developed this bad taste for each other and we don't know each other enough."

He smiled and stuck out his hand. I looked up at him and then at his hand before I shook it delicately.

"I'm Clyde Norris." He said.

His tone was kinder... gentler.

"Veronica Moore." I responded.

"It's nice to meet you." He said before he smiled a little and walked down the steps.

"Never said why you were here." I stated.

The bell rang and I could hear feet moving in the school building. He stopped, his hands in his pockets. "My daughter goes here." He said softly.

I searched his face, "Guess you do look like the kid type." I responded, before I cracked a smile.

Aubrey opened the door for her and she smiled a little and walked in, looking around.

"Wow." She said, her mouth slightly ajar. "You have a really nice place."

"Thank you." He stated, watching her from the door.

She walked around, looking at the pictures he'd chosen to display. She sat down on the couch and looked over at him.

"Did you wanna do it in the bedroom or here?" She asked.

He looked at her funny, "Do what?" He asked.

She laughed, "C'mon you invited me to your place! What else could you possibly want?" She asked.

"To talk." He stated.

She sighed, "That's all we do, Drake. You come to the club, you vent, you leave, you come back the next night. You're not tired of talking yet?"

"No," He responded softly.

"Well I am," She stated, taking off her jacket and beginning to kiss Aubrey's neck.

He let her do as she pleased but his mind was elsewhere. She shoved her hand down his pants and he stopped her. "Not interested. You hungry?"

She looked at him, "Are you gay?" She asked.

"Are you stupid?" He responded. "No I'm not gay."

"Then what the f***? What man doesn't want his d*** sucked?" She asked.

"Brought home the wrong girl." He mumbled. "Are you hungry?"

"Yeah I guess. I've been seeing that steakhouse all over Instagram. The one with a $200 flat rate. We should go there," She said, smiling a little.

Aubrey narrowed his eyes at her. He saw her then. Without all of the glitz and glamour... the darkness of the nightclub. He'd take her to dinner, but that would be all. He grabbed his keys.

"C'mon." He stated, opening the door for her.

Downtown, Stacy and I were leaving Ailey II at the Capital Theater, singing "Wade in the Water" and laughing. We'd both had a few glasses of wine. I grabbed her hand and we walked toward the curb to flag down a cab when I looked across the street and saw Aubrey pulling up in front of that steakhouse, Brasa. A small smile hit my lips until I saw a girl get out of the passenger seat. Stacy followed my gaze and frowned a little.

"He moves on fast." She said.

I sighed and nodded, "Guess so." I responded. "Welp, that's how the cookie crumbles. Let's get drunk." I said to her.

"The night is young and so are we!" She shrieked.

I put my arm around her shoulders and we walked off down the street.

Clyde was quite the ladies man. I watched as women from the office threw themselves all over him at Nicole's dinner party. Stacy sat next to me, and glanced at me before she smiled.

"You've been watching him since you got here." She said.

"Is it obvious?" I asked. "I just don't understand why all of these women are all over him. He's an a**hole."

"A cute one," Stacy responded.

"I guess," I responded, standing up and walking over to Nicole and Nori, who were near the food. They both waved and pulled me toward them.

"What's going on?" I asked.

"Do you see the girl talking to Clyde, all over him?" Nicole asked. I nodded and looked over my shoulder. "Just got married. Nori and I went to the damn wedding!"

"What does he do to these women?" I asked.

"Smiles." Nori said.

The three of us chuckled and I grabbed a plate. Clyde walked toward the table, holding a drink in his hand, a smug look on his face.

"Veronica." He stated.

"Clyde." I responded, not looking in his direction.

"Heard you have my old job." He said.

"Yeah where'd you hear that?" I asked, biting a carrot stick and looking outside.

"Doesn't matter." He responded. "But unless you plan on having sex with Calvin, consider that a permanent job."

I looked at him now, "Excuse me?"

"I'm just saying if you're looking to move up... a woman like yourself would probably have to do a few favors." He said.

"A woman like myself." I said.

"Yeah. Nicole and Nori are... a little farther than you, it seems. More sure of themselves." He said.

"Right, because you know me so well." I responded, rolling my eyes at him. "You're an ass.. by the way. The fact that these women throw themselves at you? Doesn't change your character. I'm not impressed." I said, turning to leave.

"Right, because you know me so well." He stated.

"I guess we're both judging from afar, and I'm okay with that." I stated, returning to Stacy.

RUN!

I lied in bed at home with Cayden next to me. She was holding a book up, reading silently to herself. She shut it finally and crawled on top of me. She hadn't slept in her room for a few weeks. I laughed and coughed at the same time.

"You're getting too big to crawl me like I'm a tree, dear." I said.

"Mommy can we go to the beach today?" She asked.

I nodded, "Yeah we can," I said, stroking her cheek.

She lied her head on my chest and I rubbed her head before the silence settled and I knew an Aubrey question was coming.

"...are we ever going to go back?" She asked.

"I don't know." I said softly.

"Do you think he misses you?" She asked.

"No." I responded.

She looked at me, "You don't think so? Do you miss him?" She asked.

I shrugged, "A little."

"I'm on your team, Mommy." She said.

I smiled and kissed her cheek, "Go start your bath water and pull out your suit." I told her.

She hopped off of me and ran out of my room. I sat up in bed and stretched. Once I was dressed, Cayden came down the hall wearing her sunglasses and carrying a purse. I smirked.

"I like the way you put your outfit together." I said, smiling.

She had on a cover up and had a belt around her waist, like she'd seen Deann do a million times. I followed her out into the living room and she jumped in place, excited about the beach. Once we got there, I lied down a towel and she wiggled out of her cover up. I put sunscreen on her and took off my skirt, revealing my swimsuit bottoms beneath. Cayden kneeled down in the sand and began to write her name. I put on my sunglasses and looked out at the waves. What a beautiful day.

Ronnie can save the dramatics as far as I'm concerned!!!! SHE was f***ing leaving!!!! Then gon say some "Aubrey needs us to leave." FOH!!! She was packing her s*** and bouncing, so why she wanna act all heartbroken when Aubrey finally tells her the truth. Obviously she was breaking his heart too. She couldn't let go of the past and be open with him, of course he's gonna turn elsewhere to sort s*** out. Granted Aubrey was letting his worlds collide in some dangerous ways. I wanted him to make more of an effort to not be that person, but it guess it couldn't be helped. They both obviously couldn't be who the other one needed. I'm just sorry Cayden was hurt in all of this. Run it!!

Aww damn this add was so deep. Man Im sad. Wtf is going on with Aubrey why would he do that to Ronnie? He broke her heart again. There's no way she's gonna let him back in smh. Tryna live that rockstar life messed up everything. Why do I feel like this Clyde dude may attempt to step into Ronnies life tho... Poor Cayden just as heartbroken as Ronnie is. I still can't believe Aubrey ended it. I do agree Ronnie could be a little extra and annoying sometimes but he knew how she was before they made it official both times. Aww Im sad. RUN IT

Good to see you back!!

RUN IT!!!

cmon drake u messin up man!

She did the right thing. Once you're tired of something or become second or third to everything, it gets old. RUN IT!

omgggg ever emotion shes going through im feeling it right now..those adds had me on the verge of tears...RUN ITTT

Run please.

I blame Ronnie for this. When you get back together with someone after something bad happen you have to let it go. And she didnt. She held on to it and it ruined her relationship.

omg! what is wrong with him??

he gone lose her to Clyde, lol

Run It.!

Smh wats goin on man drake u new u wasnt ready u should hav jus left her alone u fell for her n her kid n had them fall for u to only leave at the end smh run it

The final straw came the next weekend, when Aubrey came to his apartment drunk and late for dinner. I'd tried to bridge the gap, and told him that I'd make us food.. give us time to talk. It was my hope that he'd come home sober. Boy was I wrong. He walked in, three hours after he said he'd be there. I sat on the couch, my tears dry now. He shut the door and smirked.

"You're still up?" He said, walking toward me and kissing my forehead.

"...I made dinner." I said softly and looking over at him.

"s***, I forgot." He said, shaking his head.

I pulled out my phone and went to his instagram. He'd gone to the strip club... again. He smacked his lips when I showed him.

"What? I had a few drinks." He said.

My face swelled with tears again and I closed my phone and looked elsewhere. "Am I not...good enough anymore?" I asked, looking at him.

"What? Veronica you've gotta separate this life from that one." He said.

I shook my head. "Not when you choose that life over this one." I said softly. "Just...have it, okay? I'm done waiting up for you."

I stood up and walked down the hall to his bedroom. I grabbed some pajamas and went down to Cayden's room. I shut the door and locked it, before I crawled into bed with her, and slept there. The next morning, I woke up to the smell of breakfast and Cayden watching TV. She looked over at me.

"This is the second time you've slept in here." She said.

I hated how observant she was. I tossed her a reassuring smile. "Just wanted to be near you." I said.

I instructed her to get dressed and while she was in the shower, I placed her things in a duffel bag. Aubrey walked down the hall, carrying a tray of food, focusing on not spilling anything. When he got to Cayden's door and found me packing, his face fell.

"Ronnie," He said.

I looked over at him and then back at the bag. I zipped it up and stood up.

"What?" I stated.

He stood there frozen, confused.

"Why are you packing her things?" He asked.

"We're leaving." I said.

"...For the week?" He asked.

"For good." I said softly.

Cayden, out of the shower, fell out into tears in the hall. Aubrey looked down at her and then at me. I kept my composure and Cayden clung to Aubrey's leg.

"If this is about last night, I apologize. I thought it over and I was hoping we could talk over breakfast." He said.

Feeling cornered, I agreed. I hated to see Cayden's world crack the way that it did at that moment. She sat on my lap during breakfast, trying to hold on to what she thought was still there. I kissed her cheek.

"Lemme talk to Aubrey." I said.

She stood up and left the table slowly, glancing over her shoulder at me. Aubrey looked at me painfully across the table.

"Can't believe you were going to leave." He said. "We didn't even talk."

"I've tried but.. you probably don't remember since you never come home sober anymore." I said.

"It's just part of it, you know?" He asked.

"No. Because you weren't like this before. Is something going on? Is there a reason why you come home this way? Is it me?" I asked.

He didn't respond.

"Imagine how I see things, Aubrey. You come home drunk. You miss dinner to spend time at the strip club. It seems like you don't want me... like you don't want to deal with me and that's painful for me." I said, my throat clogged with tears. "Especially after what we just got over, Aubrey. You're right, I haven't let you back in because I was afraid that this would happen."

"I love you, so much, Veronica. And I am... going through some things, so I drink to escape them. I'm not drinking to escape you. Strip clubs, oddly enough, are where I do some of my best thinking and have the best conversations." He said.

"...is there someone that you talk to, there?" I asked.

He nodded.

"...Like when you met me?" I asked, my eyes glossed over with tears.

He nodded. I picked over my food and looked back at him. "I'm not okay with that... because I'm here, wishing you'd talk to me."

"You're not always easy to talk to Veronica. You used to be." He said.

"So this is about me?" I asked softly.

He shrugged, "I just...don't know how to be the guy you need me to be right now."

"...do you want me to leave?" I whispered.

"Of course not... but they say that if you love someone, sometimes you have to let them go." He said softly.

"...are you breaking up with me?" I asked, a tear falling from my eye.

He nodded, "I think we need some time apart."

Defensive, I snatched my phone and stood up, scurrying down the hall. He followed me and watched as I threw everything I had at his house in a bag.

"Veronica, I want us to still be fr-" He said.

"Don't!" I shrieked. "Go tell Cayden that you want me to leave. You do that! I have to once again pick up the pieces." I said. "Don't come back. Don't apologize. Don't try to be here for me. I don't want to see you ever again." I said, my face soaked. I grabbed my bag and left the room.

Aubrey followed me throughout the house, his mouth ajar, wanting to fill the space with something meaningful. I went into Cayden's room and she saw my face and immediately began to cry silently. I kneeled down in front of her.

"Aubrey needs us to go." I said.

He stood at the door. "Cayden I love you." He said.

She looked at him and then at me, "Why?" She asked.

"He's got some things to do with work so he'll be gone for a long time." I said, rubbing her arms.

"Okay." She said, nodding her head. She got off of the bed and ran toward him, hugging him.

He rubbed her head and looked up at me. I didn't look at him. I went to Cayden, "C'mon baby." I said softly.

Aubrey followed us to the door. I turned to leave without saying anything and he grabbed my hand.

"I'm sorry if I'm breaking your heart. I never wanted to do that to you." He said.

"You didn't break anything," I said, snatching away from him.

Man she ova reactn thats alot of money to blow bt she ova reatn to push him away she need to stop smh run it

Ok him blown that type of money at the strip club is crazy bt nun to gt mad about like that her thang is she dnt trust him smh f***n around wit her they gn be back wer they started n i really like them two together i hope this dnt f*** up there relationship run it

He knew that I knew. He had flowers delivered to my job and when I got home with Cayden, there were gifts there for the both of us. She ran to open hers and showed me all of her things. She stood in the middle of Aubrey's room, waiting on me to open mine.

"I'll wait until he gets here," I said, smiling.

I had no intention to open these things. I planned to give them back to him. I wasn't impressed. When Aubrey got home later from the studio, he walked into the bedroom to find the boxes neatly stacked in the corner and me on the bed, reading up for work. He let his eyes track me as he moved across the room, taking off his things.

"How was Charlotte?" I asked, finally, taking off my glasses.

"Had a good show." He responded softly, studying me.

I nodded, "Thank you for Cayden's gifts, she loved everything." I said.

"And you?" He asked.

"I didn't open them." I responded.

He came and sat on the bed, waiting on my explosion but it never came. I sat calmly, arranging what I wanted to say before I looked at him.

"I'm embarrassed." I started.

"Why?" He asked.

"$50,000 in a strip club, Aubrey? It's disgusting to me." I said. "How could you be so f***ing careless?" I said with an even tone.

"It's just what we do at the strip club, Veronica. You know!" He said.

"No, I'm sorry I don't know. I don't know that you spend more than I f***ing make in a year on those...hoes!" I shrieked.

"Hoes? Veronica you were a stripper. That's how we f***ing met. Don't ride a high horse here." He said.

"Right. I'm a hoe. Excuse me." I said.

"That's not what I'm saying... don't twist my words around. But if you're going to come at me for this, you've gotta do better than what you're doing. I don't see anything wrong with what I've done." He stated.

"You're a damn liar, Aubrey. You avoided me all day and bought me gifts... hoping to appease me. You know that you're wrong. I don't even know why I'm here doing this with you." I said. "I should've been gone by the time you got here."

"There you go... running." He said.

"The time that we've spent together, and the sacrifices we've both made... you'd think that by now how I feel would matter. But when it comes to this music thing and this persona you've adopted, I take the backseat and I'm not sure I feel okay here." I said. "Aubrey loves me and is delicate, understands how fragile I am. Drake simply doesn't give a f***."

He stared back at me, not sure what to say in response. "That's not true." He said.

"Then prove it, got dammit!" I yelled. "If you don't want this, say so. If you don't want to come home to me and my nagging, say so. If you want to blow $50,000 in the strip club every weekend, do it. But I won't be here when you get back."

"You're blowing this out of proportion, Veronica. It has nothing to do with you." He said.

"Right." I responded, shutting my laptop and turning off the light, before I rolled over, my back facing him.

"I don't know what you want from me, anymore." He mumbled.

"Just wish I was part of the equation." I mumbled.

"You're not even making any sense. I'm not going to sit here and dignify this bulls*** with a response." He said, standing up and leaving the room.

The smell of Hennessy on this breath had become part of him. I guess I wasn't surprised that the conversation went the way that it did.

News spread like wildfire. Drake blows $50,000 in a strip club. Deann sipped her tea quietly as I bounced my leg lightly beneath the table we shared at Travonna coffee house.

"So," She said.

"So." I responded, staring at the table in front of me.

"What's going on in your head?" She asked.

"A lot of nothing." I responded, looking over at her. "But I'm pissed, D."

"As you should be." She said.

"More than I make in a year... he discards at a strip club? He had to have gotten something in return, right?" I asked.

D was quiet, afraid of saying too much. "Just remember your beginnings." She said softly.

I ran my fingers through my hair and shook my head. "I don't know what to even say to him."

"Be cool about it. Don't blow up when you see him. Make sure Cayden isn't around. Define what you want from him and what you won't tolerate. If he loves you like he says he does, he'll listen. If he tries to negotiate, you need to rethink this union." She said.

I nodded and took a sip of my latte, "Thanks D." I said softly.

When I got to Aubrey's, he was sitting on the couch, listening to Cayden read him a book. I looked at my watch and shut the door. He looked up and smiled.

"It's past her bed time," I stated, walking toward the two of them. I kissed her forehead and sat down next to her.

"I just wanted to say good night," She said, climbing into my lap and wrapping her arms around me.

I rubbed her back and kissed her cheek. "I love you. Missed you all day." I said to her.

"Me too." She responded, before she pulled back and looked me in the face. "You're my best friend."

I smiled and pecked her lips, "Have you taken your bath?" I asked.

She nodded, "Alright let's get you to bed." I said, standing up with her on my hip. "You're getting too big for this."

I carried her down to her room at Aubrey's and she ran and hopped in the bed, waiting for me to come and sit down. I tucked her in and sat down next to her.

"Did you have fun with Aubrey?" I asked.

She nodded, "Yeah, we made pizza!" She said.

I smiled and kissed her cheek. She put her hands on my cheeks.

"Can we stay here forever?" She asked.

"Maybe. I'll think about it." I said.

"Okay." She said.

I kissed her forehead and she rolled over onto her side and dozed off. I stood up and walked down the hall to Aubrey, who had poured himself a drink and was waiting on me.

"It's 9. Why are you drinking?" I asked, sitting down next to him on the couch and running my hand through his hair.

He shrugged, "Because it's 9." He said, chuckling.

"So you're leaving tomorrow." I said, searching his face.

"Yes." He responded, searching mine. "Are we going to be okay when I get back?"

"I hope so." I said.

My answer wasn't what he wanted, so he looked away and finished his drink quickly.

"What's the matter?" I asked.

"Don't feel like you've let me in yet." He said, pouring another glass. "We've been back together for 2 months and when I think things are normal, you say I hope so."

"It's late. I'm tired. Let's just go to bed." I said.

"I'm staying up." He responded. "I'll see you in the morning before I leave."

I looked him in the eye and stayed there for a while, before I stood up and walked down the hall. I slept in Cayden's room that night.

I stood at the window, watching the rain come down, drenching anything that happened to be beneath it. I looked over my shoulder to find Stacy gathering her things, headed home for the evening. I turned around and walked toward her, a small smile on my face.

"Not joining us for drinks?" I asked, my arms draped over her cubicle.

"Not tonight. I've got a date," She said, a smile on her face.

"With?" I asked.

"This guy I met while I was visiting my parents this weekend. He's driving down to meet me." She said, swinging her bag over her shoulder.

"Have a ball," I said, smiling. "It'll be weird not having you there though. Just me and the old heads," I said, laughing.

"You should have a good time. Where's Cay?" She asked.

"Aubrey picked her up from school today so, I've got a little time to myself." I said.

"God bless Aubrey." She said, winking and heading toward the elevator.

"Be classy and coy." I told her as she walked away.

She smirked, "Ay ay captain!" She said.

I grabbed my purse and went downstairs to the lobby where I met up with Nicole and Nori. Both of the ladies started out as interns, like myself, and now they sit at the table with Calvin. They're game changers, so having drinks with them served a dual purpose - got a chance to spend some time without Cayden... and this was a big networking opportunity. The two of them greeted me with a smirk.

"Wish I could have that body back!" Nicole said, "You whipped right into shape after your baby, didn't you?"

I nodded and she shook her head, "Not at this age. I'm ripe."

Nori nodded, "Tell me about it. Ronald is talking about another baby, but I know my ass will be out of the office for at least 3 months if I do. I don't have it like that anymore."

I listened to the two of them, a small smile on my face. We caught a cab to a bar a few blocks away. I followed behind them as their hair whipped in the wind, their umbrellas unwavering above their heads. I'm sure I looked and smelled like a wet dog when I got inside. I'd forgotten my umbrella. I went to the restroom and put my hair up immediately. I put on some lotion and draped my coat over my arm, before I went out to meet them. They'd gotten a booth, which was now occupied by a few other people, all dressed in business attire. I smiled and pulled up a stool. A guy walked in, shaking hands with the people he passed. He walked toward the table and Nicole tossed him a look.

"It's great to see you too Nicole. Good evening everyone," He said, unbuttoning one of his buttons and sitting down at the booth.

He looked up at me and then at Nicole.

"Who's the newbie?" He asked.

"She's sitting right there." Nicole said.

He looked up at me now, my face beet red. Something about successful businesspeople made me nervous.

"...you got a name?" He asked.

Nicole smacked her lips and looked at me, "Ignore him. He's misplaced his manners."

Nori smiled at him and then at me.

"Veronica." I stated flatly.

He nodded and looked around for a waiter. The waiter came and he ordered himself a drink. Nori looked across the table at him.

"How are the numbers looking this month, Clyde?" She asked.

He shrugged, "Like every other month." He responded. "Perfect." He said, before he flashed his smile.

She rolled her eyes, "I keep telling Nicole that you two should come join me at the company, but y'all are glued to Calvin's ass." He said.

"We like where we are." Nicole responded. "You used to like it too."

"Until I got tired of Calvin's dedication to sameness. I worked my ass off there for 3 years and never got any recognition. Don't get me wrong, both of you deserved your promotions but not once was I even offered a chance to move up. I couldn't waste any more time there." He said.

Nori and Nicole nodded, understanding. I looked at him.

"You worked for Calvin? What did you do?" I asked.

"I was a marketing intern." He said.

"Oh," I responded, looking away.

He studied me before his drink arrived. He looked back at me.

"I'm Clyde, by the way." He said.

"Yeah I got that," I responded, looking him in the eye.

"Perfect." He responded, looking back at Nicole.
