"Let The Drummer Kick"

As Citizen Cope gracefully soothed her mind, she stood companionless in the middle of the empty community college gymnasium right in the middle of the faint halfway line of the basketball court, looking pleasant and light-hearted on the outside, but feeling nervous and disgruntled on the inside.

With the ball trapped just between the fat on her bicep and ribcage, she looked up at the horribly painted red and white walls and read the different banners and pennants from previous years and even before her time that hung there decorating the walls. There were plenty for her to go through.

A quick indrawn breath escaped her lips.

"I hate transferring.." she mumbled under her breath.

Because her music was so loud, she wasn't able to hear the sound of a whistle being blown from the coaches lips as he trudged in front of his team of varsity senior boys. As the screeching sound came to an end it was replaced by the squeak of twelve different pairs of sneakers pacing against the freshly waxed wood floors of the gymnasium.

In single file they ran behind one another. The vibration coming from the floors underneath her feet is what snapped at her attention. She turned to her left and in time she caught sight of the team running laps around her. She met eyes with their feet until she met with the last pair and brought her eyes up to the face of the owner.

<a href="">Josiah</a> jogged at a good pace behind his team making sure no one fell behind and everyone stayed in line, but every few seconds his attention was pulled over to the girl standing in the middle of the court. His eyes didn't want to stay on her for long, but something wouldn't let him pull away. Her presence was like a gravitational pull. He couldn't see her face for a while until he came around the front end of the court to catch her staring at the ground by his feet, he wanted a better look though, so he kept his eyes locked on her face for as long as he could and as if she felt his burning stare, she finally looked up from his traveling shoes, to his eyes.

They were locked on one another.

She wasn't sure why she felt the need to stare, her mother had taught her better than that.

A tap on her shoulder had her snap out of her mind and around to face the person whom the finger belonged to. The coach stared down at her with questioning eyes, causing her to squint in confusion before she removed a bud from her ear.

"I said I'm sorry, this is a closed practice. No spectators miss..." Asked the well built <a href="">man</a> in all Adidas wear.

"J-Jade..Vice." She stuttered, nerves getting the upper hand.

"Ahh, from the Wakelin Community College Hornets varsity team, right?" Asked the coach. <a href="">Jade</a> nodded shortly before letting her eyes dart over to the jogging team, coincidently landing on Josiah's once again.

"I heard through the grapevine that you'd be joining us soon. I'm Coach Mack. It's nice to meet you." Said the coach holding out his hand for her to shake.

She tore her eyes away once she saw that he was looking right back at her. She wondered if he were staring at her, or the conversation between her and his coach. Looking out in front of her she joined hands with Coach Mack and smiled small.

"Nice to meet you too, Coach." She replied softly.

"You trying out tomorrow afternoon? My girls varsity could really use a good point guard. Emphasis on the "good" part." He asked with a brow raised. Jade smirked dryly. She wasn't so sure she wanted to go through the whole process of joining a team again. She had been snatched right out of her comfort zone and dropped into a brand new life that she knew nothing about.

"I'm not sure I want to this time around..too much I gotta do right now with classes and catching up and what not..I don't know.." She answered with a simple shrug of her shoulders.

"Give it some thought, and if you decide it's what you want..then I'll see you here tomorrow at 2:30pm sharp." He rested a comforting hand on her shoulder, patting it gently. Jade offered him a smiled and nodded.

"Transition's always tough but, you're gonna like it here..and I'd love to have you on our team Miss. Vice." He encouraged. Jade, feeling very conflicted at the moment, only smirked at his words.

"Thanks Coach.." She spoke lowly, almost instantly falling into a depression over the matter. She'd have a new coach, a new team even. Building relationships with people was never her strong point.

Josiah had managed to perfect the art of not seeming like a creep in the time he'd been running laps with his team. His teammate for a year, <a href="">Ryder</a>, spun around on his heels and began jogging backwards, grabbing Josiah's attention.

"Ey dawg, who's that talkin' with coach? I ain't never seen him so nice, even with girls." He asked eyeing the two bodies in the middle of the court as his face twisted up in confusion. Josiah only shook his head and looked back over to her, thinking that since Ryder was doing it, there was no way he'd look weird doing it as well. He couldn't see her face anymore, only her back and the outline of her small frame. She was tall, but not freakishly tall in his opinion. He judged by the ball tucked underneath her arm that she was a baller, which immediately caught his attention when he first laid eyes on her.

"I don't even know man. Look like she a baller though." He breathed trying to pace himself and speak to his friend, who shrugged and returned to his jog, spinning on his feet to face the front once again.

Jade locked eyes with him for what must had been the fourth time now. She couldn't deny that from where he was he looked absolutely gorgeous. His glistening caramel complexion and tattoos really did wonders for him. His toned legs and defined biceps really had her taking second looks. He had almost all of her attention.

"Give it some still gotta go though. It's still a closed practice." Smiled Coach Mack. Jade pulled her eyes off of the boy and focused on the man, delivering a light hearted chuckle and a nod.

"See you around Coach." She paid one last look at the team and then the last runner, catching his eyes yet again before she turned on the heels of her shoes and trailed out of the gym at a smooth pace.

From what she could gather the coach was a cool and down to earth man. He was young, and vibrant with every word he spoke. She liked that.

Josiah watched as she retreated out of the gym. Her long flowing dark hair sweeping her cheeks as she moved with a calm he hadn't seen anyone walk with in a while. He wondered what her story was, knowing by the way she looked at him, that she has one.

"Ey Coach can we stop man?!" Yelled a tired Ryder. The coach laughed and blew on his whistle, signaling for them to stop and meet in the middle of the court to do some stretching.

"Ey Coach who was that fine piece of tail you was talkin' to?" Asked another of Josiah's of teammates and friend, <a href="">Dev</a>. Coach Mack threw him a look.

"A piece of tail you will never get to Devon, so hush." He told him. The gym was then filled with laughter. Josiah had to laugh himself.

"I see you Coach.." Muttered Dev with a sour look.

"Nah but for real though Coach..who she be?" asked Josiah with curiosity written in the creases of his forehead. Coach Mack looked over at the captain of the senior varsity team and smirked.

"I'm surprised you don't already know." He said. The boys all looked at one another with confusion.

"Jade Vice. Former point guard for the Wakelin Community College Hornets. She transferred from there last week. She's well known back where she's from." He told them, watching as they switched stretches.

"Which is?" Asked Ryder.

"Brooklyn." He replied.

"Woo..damn! Shorty came a long way dawg. From Brooklyn to Atlanta?" Spoke Dev. Josiah's eyebrows raised in slight surprise. That was quite a random change in scenery. Shaking his head, he also shook her out of his thoughts knowing he had better things to worry about.

"Aight, aight enough with that talk. Let's go everybody to the base line! I want suicides let's go!" Said the coach as he blew his whistle and watched the boys jog to the base line, ready to work hard.

"We got our first game of the school year on Friday! Exactly one week! First game of the semester! And I want a win! So we gon' work! Let me see y'all put in work!" His yells echoed throughout the gym as he strolled along the half way line with his hands behind his back. The teams feet pounded against the wooden floors leaving skid marks at every line.

As Jade stood outside the gym she was immediately met with the fresh air of the day, the breeze was calm and sun was bright and high in the afternoon sky. The campus was flooded with students mingling and horse playing with each other in their groups. Jade stood there, alone and in her own world as she looked over everything in front of her. This was the view of her life now. Things were so different from her city life.

Digging into her pants pocket, she pulled out the folded paper with the directions to her dorm room and the blueprint to the college campus. She read over the title at the top of the page.

<em>Welcome to University of Atlanta!</em>

Groaning internally, she began to move in the direction which she hoped was right and would take her to her dormitory.

<em>"Let the drummer kick, let the drummer kick that.."</em>

Ohhhhhhhhh, new story! I love it already. RUN IT!

Run It!!!

And thoughts does it again with a dope ass story. As long as you keep adding to this AND Simply Beautiful I'm with it all the way shawty!

Run it!

Aww s*** this is real!! I like how you paint pictures of honestly the simplest things. Josiah and Jade are playing eye tag again huh? I wonder when they will actually legit have a conversation. Tina and her crew seem really cool. I hope she opens up a lil more.

"Allow Me To Re-Introduce Myself!"

"Did you know about this?" Yelled Jade over Jay Z to Tina as her eyes scanned the crowded diner just off of campus. The music was loud and the everyone was in high spirits, some off of alcohol and some from the simple feeling of happiness. She wasn't expecting all of this when she stepped in, so it was definitely a surprise.

"I swear I had no idea. Last year, I never used to eat off campus. I just found this place today I never knew they were throwin a party in it!" She yelled over the music. Fraternities and Sororities flooded the floor, stepping to their team anthems and people not involved in any brother or sisterhoods simply stood off to the side enjoying the scene in front of them.

"Love this song though." Said Tina as she walked ahead of Jade, ready to join the party. Groaning, Jade followed a few steps behind her. Catching the stares of a few good looking guys on the way, Jade kept her head straight trying her best to avoid them. She just wanted to grab her food and go back to her room where she could relax in peace and figure out her plan for tomorrow. Tina found a few friends and immediately ran over to them to greet them in hugs. Jade found an empty booth and thanked the good graces above the skies as she took a seat and a moment to collect herself. There were so many people, she couldn't keep track of their faces.

"Vice! I want you to meet some of my girls. I've known em since my sandbox days, don't worry they cool, they ball too!" Said Tina as she brought over two girls to her table. Jade smiled despite how irritated she felt at that moment.

"Hey! I'm Chloe. It's nice to meet you. We don't get a lot of Brooklyn faces these days." Said Chloe as she waved to Jade.

"Vice! Nice to meet you!" She yelled over powering the music for just a moment before shifting her eyes over to the last girl of the group.

"What's up! I'm Kendra!" Introduced the toned caramel colored tomboy dressed in Nike wear from top to bottom in front of Jade. She held out her hand to shake and immediately, Jade shook it. She didn't know why, but she felt as though Kendra carried herself with a nonchalance attitude that Jade herself would never be able to accumulate in a lifetime. She had a vibe that Jade instantly connected with.

"Vice! Nice to meet you!" She replied. Kendra nodded.

"You gon' chill here for the rest of the night with us?" Asked Tina. Jade thought about it for a moment.

"Nah, I'm pretty beat, imma order some food and head back to the room and catch some zees." Said Jade.

"Aight then, imma fill you in on anything you miss." Said Tina.

"Ouh! Order the cheeseburger combo! This place serves the best cheeseburgers and French fries I swear!" Gushed Chloe as she daydreamed about the food. Jade smiled thankfully, cheeseburgers were her favorite. Chloe was the bubbly friend you always needed in a circle of friends.

"Thanks for the tip!" She yelled as she waved goodbye to the girls and squished her way through the crowd of students. Careful not to make eye contact with anyone in particular she spotted the register and the co worker standing behind it taking an order. She was glad the line wasn't too long while she stood patiently bobbing her head to the music, behind the person who was previously ordering his meal, accompanied by a girl whom she assumed was his girlfriend.

"Ey D, follow me to front! Any of these thirsty chicks try and holla imma send them your way. I'm bout to grab some food and be out!" Yelled Josiah to his teammate. Dev followed after him. He grew tired of the scene after being there for two hours. Nothing extravagant was happening so there was no reason for him to extend his stay. He wanted to go back to his room and get some rest so that he wouldn't be too tired for practice tomorrow. Making it to the line he saw that there were only two people ahead of him. His eyes fell on the person in front of his six foot two frame that owned the small frame and the same clothes he saw on them earlier and recognized them to be the girl.

"Ey look it's that chi--"

"Man-shut up D! I see.." He shoved his friend with the sharp end of his elbow. Dev, groaned as Josiah's body part came into contact with his chest and he rubbed at the spot with a sour look on his face.

Josiah read the print on bottom area of the back of her hoodie as he passed the time.

<em>Wakelin University Hornets</em>

He smirked at the fact that she was brave enough to represent her old team on another teams turf. He could respect that.

"Hey, let me get a cheeseburger combo. Large the fries, and let me get a coke to drink. Thanks a lot." Josiah listened as Jade ordered her combo. His eyes widened a bit when the order didn't go how he though it would. He expected the thin girl in front of him to order a smaller meal, not the extra large version of it.

"Damn.." He mumbled low enough so that no one would hear him. He watched as Jade payed and stepped to the side shoving her hands into the pockets of her track pants, giving him space to order his own meal.

Unexpectedly, their eyes locked, but only for a moment. Jade was the first to pull away from the tug. Josiah shrugged it off, moving on as if nothing had ever happened.

Though on the inside he was replaying the moment over and over again.

"Ey what's good Craig, let me get a cheeseburger meal and add some lettuce and mayo on that, large the fries, and give me a coke to drink. Oh, and add a extra cheeseburger, same toppings with all that for me playa. Respect." Said Josiah as he pulled money out of his pocket. He felt eyes on him but kept his gaze forward.

Jade stood looking at the boy beside her. She was amazed with his appetite and wondered where he stowed it all away once he ate it. He definitely had an athletes appetite. She suddenly wished she could put a name to his face.

"Woah.." She muttered to herself.

Josiah couldn't hide the chuckle, the corner of his lip turned up in a smirk when he heard the word escape Jade's mouth.

"Sorry.." She mumbled, embarrassed realizing he heard her. His eyes flashed over to her quickly before looking back down at his phone while he waited for his change.

"Nah, you good ma." He spoke. Jade decided that she would shut up for the rest of the time that she were in his presence. She praised all Gods when the rush of blood to her cheeks had finally disappeared and her food appeared in front of her in the brown paper bag labeled "Charley's Diner". Without giving another look, she left him at the register and headed back to her dorm for the rest of the night.

Josiah watched her out of the corner of his eye and turned around when she disappeared out of his preferable vision to find her squeezing through the colorful crowd of people and disappearing out of the diner.

"Ey dawg, why you ain't holla?!" Asked a confused Dev. Josiah smacked his teeth and waved his friend off.

"I don't know, maybe it's because I'm with somebody?..dumbass." He replied grabbing his food and making his way out of the diner. Dev followed close behind smacking his lips together in annoyance waving Josiah off.

"Jay please, fall back with all that. The whole team knows you ain't feelin' Breanna. She clingy as f*** yo...and she a b****! Off that." Said Dev. Josiah only rolled his eyes as he dug into his bag of food to munch on his fries.

"Kill that noise, D." Was all he had to say. Dev shot his hands up in surrender.

"Ey, you know I got you nigga, but you also know that I know you better than anyone here. Lie to them niggas, not me." He said.

"Aight well imma be out, gotta handle my schedule in the morning. They f***ed up with one of my english courses." Said Josiah, dapping Dev.

"Aight imma let you know if anything jumps off." He pointed behind him with his thumb back at the diner. Josiah nodded and spun on his Jordan's, beginning his walk to his black honda civic in the parking lot.

Her eyes imprinted in his mind.

Oh snaps I feel like this is going to be another great story!
Run it!!!!

Jade strolled into her room, ready for a nap after a long day of heat and walking around campus aimlessly, trying to find her way back to her dormitory. She, however came face to face with whom she assumed to be her roommate who was in the middle of pinning up posters on her side of the tiny room made for two.

"Hey." said her roommate, her voice wasn't what Jade assumed it would be. It was more sultry and calm, than loud and obnoxious. Jade smirked, pushing the door closed softly and removed her black jansport backpack from her shoulders, tossing it onto her bed close to the door.

"..Hey." She replied politely, standing in front of her bed resting the ball down on her all black comforter.

"..I'm Christina Hardy. You can call me Tina though." She said holding out her hand for Jade to shake. She was pleasant as far as Jade could tell, owned a bright smile and had a naturally pretty face and a wild curly mane that deminded her much of her own whenever she washed her hair. It wouldn't be as hard as she thought it would be to warm up to her. She threw her first impression jitters right out the window.

"I'm Jade Vice. Call me Vice." She smiled warmly. <a href="">Christina</a> smiled back, intrigued with her name altogether.

"I like it. Okay Vice, well..we're roomies." She gestured with her hands to the small room with two beds, two closets, and two desks.

Jade was comfortable with the space, feeling that it was way more presentable than her old dorm room back at Wakelin.

"Dope." She threw herself backwards onto her bed and snuggled her arms underneath her head, looking up at the ceiling.

"You ball?" Asked Tina noticing the basketball that Jade had in her lap.

"Ball is life." She breathed, picking up the ball beside her and tossing it up into the air. Tina lit up at her reply.

"Ohh dope! I ball too. I'm a shooting guard on the varsity team, this is my second year. We won the championships last year. You should try out tomorrow!" She beamed. Jade only chuckled.

"Nah, I don't know yet. Too much goin' on." Said Jade thinking of any excuse. Tina frowned a bit but didn't push.

"That too bad man. What position you play though?" She questioned. Jade continued tossing the ball up in the air with great form.

"Point guard." She answered. Tina nodded, her frown ran deeper. Her team needed a point guard badly.

"..You're not from here are you? I was expecting some loud girl this year, but you're the exact opposite. Plus the way you carry mighty chill.." Said Tina as she sat with one foot tucked under her butt on the chair in front of her desk. Jade chuckled and shifted to sit up against the wall with her legs folded.

"I'm from BK." she announced. Tina's eyes darted from her posters which she was currently admiring to Jade.

"Oh, so you're a foreigner." She joked earning a laugh from Jade, the first laugh since she arrived on campus.

"Basically." She smiled playing with her lanky fingers. She made note to paint her finger nails when she had time.

" don't talk much do you?" Asked Tina.

"Not lately. I'm still adapting to the sudden change in scenery." She expressed. Tina understood, so she nodded.

"I get it....I think we'll get along just fine girl. You seem cool." She smiled at Jade.

"Yeah. You too." She gave a faint smile, her eyes cluttered closed as she began to relax. Tina gathered her wallet and keys and stood from the chair.

"Imma go and grab some dinner at some hot spot I found earlier. You wanna come?" She asked Jade.

In all honesty Jade was seriously tired, the hassle of the week was beginning to catch up with her, but she didn't want to be a downer either.

"Yeah, why not." She groaned as she stood to her feet from her bed grabbing her student card and wallet from her drawer. She walked out of the open door with a smirk.

"Yeah, ya ass could use some meat girl." Jokes Tina earning a scoff from Jade.

"I'm a size six dude. I'm good." Said Jade defending herself.

"That may be able to fly in BK, honey but here in the A, it aint enough, but imma teach you don't worry." Said Tina closing the door behind her. Jade laughed for the second time that day.

"Oh word?" Asked Jade with a smile.

"Word..don't worry Vice, I got you." Replied Tina as she patted Jade's shoulder.

Jade only laughed at her antics. She was sure now that having Tina as her roommate would be doable. She was a cool girl in her books and reminded her of her friends back home.

"You aight.." Said Jade to her new friend as they retreated down the hallway of the a second floor of the dormitory.

"I'm awesome is what I am." Replied Tina with a c**ky smile as she pointed to her chest.

Jade playfully rolled her eyes.
